Pottery is a great hobby to get into. Throwing wheels aren't that cheap, for the good kind, but you can always get a bag of white clay to hand build a sculpture. There are several types to: some clay requires to be baked by a kiln, others air dry, and some never completely harden if moistened regularly and is properly stored. Any art store should carry some sort, if not, check online. Even start out with some Play-Doh and make sure you like it.

One of my favorite things to make, and easy is:

Either ball up a piece of clay (or roll it flat out and conform it around the ball of newspaper, smoothing out the seams), let it harden a little, say for an hour, then carve out the inside from the 'bottom'. Stuff with newspaper and carve design all the way through to the newspaper. Harden all the way, paint or glaze, remove newspaper and you have a votive candle holder.
