What we do to girls and women in this day and age is an atrocity. We constantly feed them in hundreds of ways daily the notion that they are only good for sex, that they should look sexy, act sexy, dress sexy, to be taken at any value. Its insane.
The other day, in the afternoon, was a commercial for the newest episode of "Gossip Girl" - which, if you don't know, is a show based a series of books aimed at pre-teen girls which chronicles the lives and loves and sex lives of rich kids at Manhattan private schools. The commercial, at 3:00 in the afternoon, was showing quick snippets of what looked like adults having various romps in bed, moaning, writhing, sheets twisted, with the letters O-M-F-G in between cuts. (of course, to mean, Oh My F*ck*ing God). I thought it was a movie ad! Then the screen flashes a giant "OMFG" with a voice-over - "Gossip Girl, all new episode." Seriously, I thought I'd have a stroke.
I'm pretty darn liberal, but at 3 in the afternoon, played during a CARTOON commerical break, for my young daughter or any other young child to see, really ****ed me off.
Read "Prude: How the Sex Obsessed Culture Damages Girls (and America Too!)" by Carol Platt Leibau. Its got some good points.
There are things that bother me, though. There's all this supposed research saying that girls are having sex younger and younger in this decade. But, if you just look at pop culture - movies from the early eighties, like "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" or Jodi Foster in "Foxes" - even "Little Darlings" with Kristi MacNichol and Tatum O'Neal. The female characters talk about losing their virginity at 13, 14 and 15... which means that it was going on two and three decades ago the same way it goes on now.
Keeping our heads in the sand because we don't want our girls doing what lots of us did at the same age isn't going to stop them from doing it. Does it shock me that eighth graders are having orgies and rainbow parties and train parties? Yeah, that freaks me out. Also the fact that they don't consider oral or anal sex, sex. But what specifically bothers me about it is their lack of knowledge about their own bodies and the consequences that can arise. Their bodies are much more mature than ours were at that age, but their brains sure aren't. So kids wanting to have sex in early teens doesn't shock me. I don't think that's anything new.
I think the Nazi comparisons are way off the mark.
