Myspace has it's downfalls, but you are going to find those sorts of things on just about any community site where people can post pictures and their own content. It's really hard to maintain any sort of order when you have such an insane amount of members and content.
I too am on myspace. I have two profiles actually. One for business and one personal. I also manage a couple for other people (I make custom profiles). I did notice something that relates to what you have mentioned. When I first signed up for my account, I too was bombarded with a lot of perverted guys sending me ridiculous messages. I promptly told them off. I also added a disclaimer to my page in plain site that said how I felt about the perverted people and that they better not even try to contact me. It seemed to work well. Talking about my husband and family also helped keep them away.
Did you also know that there is an option to block anyone you want to? So anyone you never want to talk to again, just block them and they will get the hint real quick.
As for the sexual content on other people's pages, you just can't do much about that. I just ignore it. I mostly use myspace to stay in touch with friends and family anyway and to see how their lives are going (blogs are good for that). A lot of my family lives on the opposite side of the US so it's a nice communication tool for us. It's much better then just emailing or using the phone.
