I read an article on this recently and it said that just straight cardio isn't as effective as it is if you mix it up. I know running you burn more calories if you pyramid. That is run to get your heart rate up and breathing hard and then move into a brisk walk (power walking is good - keep those arms moving) let your heart and breathing regulate and then run again.
