Default Divided Attention

My boyfriend is really popular among his friends; he isn't the stereotypical 'popular' type, however he is just really well liked and his friends are always in contact with him.

Lately though, he seems to be paying more attention to his friends than he has to me; when we are online MSN (we are in a bit of a distance relationship) sometimes it takes him 15+ minutes to reply to a simple question like "How are you?". If I ask if he is busy he will say "Just juggling a lot of chat windows."

I don't have any friends in the city where I live during my off time from college (as it is not where I grew up), and have been feeling pretty lonely and down about it. His (unequally) divided attention has been upsetting me, but I don't know how to tell him about it.

He told me we couldn't get together this weekend because he had a dental appointment and was "very busy" with other things. We haven't seen each other in a couple weeks, and I just found out that he is spending the weekend with a friend who has been dealing with a heart condition. Now, I don't want to seem insensitive, heart conditions are scary and serious things, and I hope she gets better; but doesn't she have family to take care of her in her time of need?

Every guy deserves time with his friends, I understand that; but I deserve some of his time too. How do I ask/get him to pay more attention to me without seeming like a selfish who only wants him for myself?
