We hung out with my friend and his twice and he didn't really make an effort to talk to me. It sort of seems like he's the type of person who speaks when spoken to--just like me. But he knew I was going to be there beforehand both times and went along.
Honestly I think it's just friendly chat. I throw in my sarcastic sense of humor sometimes and he reciprocates, but both conversations were less than ten minutes and mostly about school.
