You're gonna love Kiki's Delivery Service and Nausicaa.....Kiki's my fave...... I must say Graveyard of Fireflies is a tearjerker. It's based on a true story.

not only in Miyazaki but I find in alot of anime there's alot of strong female characters. Another anime I love is Bubblegum Crisis. It's a story about a group of 4 women who are vigilantes...they wear these robotic suits and fight against a corporation who is evil. It's pretty interesting. Great soundtrack too.
