If you broke out in a rash from taking the amoxicillin than it is considered to be an allergic reaction.

That is what I thought, but I read there is sometimes a non-allergic rash that can happen...

Actually-the allergic reaction rash will appear differently than what is known as an amoxicillan rash or toxic rash. An allergic reaction will appear more like hives or be extremely itchy and be all over your body. If it is a lighter pink or red rash with spots that are flat and stays mainly on the trunk of the body (though it may spread to arms and face) it would likely be considered the amox rash-which is NOT an allergic reaction. The best way to find out would be to see a dermatologist while you have the rash still. Obviously yours is gone-and within the typical time frame of the amox rash (usually lasts about 3 days, can last up to 6).
Be careful when assuming an allergic reaction to amoxicillan or any other penicillan related drug as if you are truly allergic it is very important to make that known to any dr or pharmacist who is involved in your medical care, and at the same time penicillan is such a broad spectrum antibiotic that it is very important in treating many severe infections, and if you are not actually allergic to it but tell drs that you are, it could prevent effective/efficient treatment should you ever actually need penicillan. |

I am highly allergic to amoxicillan....It actually is on all my records...It affects me with the rash and shortness of breath so don't mess around with it....
I saw the Dermatologist and spoke with the Pharmacist about this so I can only use Cipro as a defense against infections... |
