    Hey All,

My kid has been suffering from Asthma and recently I came to know that he is allergic to pets and I had gone to hospital the other day.The doctor said that my son's asthma is triggered because of pets.He also said that pet's dead skin flakes, urine, feces, saliva and hair can trigger asthma. I am having pets with me and it's difficult for me to live without it.

Does asthma flare up because of pet allergies?

Yes it can cause flare ups. Once an allergy is triggered the histamine release will be through the roof an already existing condition like asthma can get much worse. You can have your child take some antihistamines like Claritin and Reactine to lower the chance of an asthma attack (big or small) but I would consult with the doctor before doing that. And if your kid is very allergic the reaction can get very bad. Keep an epi pen around just in case. If he has an prescription inhaler keep that nearby as well.

yes. Best way to combat it is wash linens regularly. Vacuum floors and furniture daily. Dust daily to everyother day with a duster that picks up dust hair and lint *like a swiffer duster* and also they make pet wipes to wipe your pet down with daily to help remove there dander and allergens. Hope this helps

    Hey All,

Thank you so much for the info. Very true. It is very important to clean and vaccum everyday so that my house is free from dust.

The other night, my son couldn't seem to breathe right. His friend kept making him laugh a lot. He took too much of his inhaler, and got the shakes, and had a hard time sleeping.

Just thought I would share...most of the time his asthma is under control but it reared its ugly head in the last few days.

The guys have said it right...

As much as it sucks, Asthma suffers can live with pets, but the problem is when they shed their fur and they do daily, half the time you can't see it and half the time, you don't think of the effort you have to put in to keep things clean and free of fur even if they live inside.

My ex-husband suffered from this as well, the only way to do it is to clean daily their beds, and wash the beds weekly and linen and even clean the curtains if they are any.

It probably is not under control because there is more shedding of fur at this point in time.

    MOST DEFINATELY!!!!!

I was brought up with cats and always had allergies plus 5 years of allergy shots when I was a kid.

During college, I got away from cats and all other pets for many many years.

My husband and I got two kittens - never thought anything of it.......my allergy symptoms (sneezing, sniffling) were minimal. However - after 3 weeks of being exposed to these kittens.... my lungs & airways got soooo inflamed I could hardly breathe and had to go to the Emergency room.

I had to get rid of the kittens immediately (doctors orders)..... luckily, my parents took them in.

So yes!!!!!!! PETS can definately cause a lot of allergies and asthma and even mild asthma!!

    Hey Janster,

Thank you so much for the info. Very true, now even I realize that my son's allergies trigger up because of my pets. I am also planning to get rid of the kids as I could not see my son suffering.

Any information about the tests which helps to diagnose asthma? My kid's asthma has taken a toll on him both physically and mentally. I need more information on this. PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!

I got a good laugh this morning (in red)..... I knew what you meant.

I've had countless visits to doctors and countless breathing tests and nothing shows up as having asthma. Obvioiusly, people have full blown asthma and others (like me) have asthma that's triggered by certain things. I don't have medications and I don't carry any inhalers. I used to carry an inhaler but I wouldn't use it and it would expire - so I stopped carrying one.
One other 'trigger' for me - is MRI dies (iodine). The first time I discovered this was during an MRI (duh), I got hives & couldn't breathe (swollen Bronc tubes). There could be other triggers that I have NO idea what they are yet and I just have to be prepared to see the symptoms coming on.

Your best bet would be to see the doctor. They can either send you to an allergist or pulmonary specialist depending on your symptoms. It's hard to say..... I think asthma and allergies can go hand-n-hand and people who suffer from both have a variety of severties and triggers.

Ultimately..... If this is affecting you & your son and the doctor/allergist has diagnosed you with a form of pet related asthma or allergies - you might consider living life without pets. I'm not saying get rid of them right away - but when they get older and pass-on, not replacing them with new ones.
It just depends on how bad your situation is......

And anyway, people with pet allergies aren't allergic to every single animal... I love pets as well, especially cats, but am allergic. I think if I ever rid myself of these buggers, I will get something completely different like a parrot.

In the meantime I have to take allergy meds every week or so.
