Default What happens to your nails under acrylics?

I have just gotten acrylic nails and I intend on keeping them, i.e. getting an infill every 3 weeks or so.

Is this bad for your natural nails??

Yep - but I do it anyways. Your nails get very very thin and week. I've gone on breaks where I take them off with the intentions of not having them put back on, but I always go back after a couple of weeks. I'm a nail biter, so without them, I'll just chew on my nails all day. Gross I know, but it's a fact. So I guess I'd rather have week nails covered in acrylic than no nails because I bite them.

Bugger it, why does there always have to be a price to pay when it comes to beauty?!

Is it really the acrylic that's bad for your nails or is it the filing-down process they do before-hand to make them stick?
I've always thought it was the latter.

Good point. I always assumed it was the acrylic, but yeah, they file the crp out of your nails. I'll have to do some looking into this.

Let me know what you come up with, Lana! I really LOVE how they look but if I am going to end up with yucky nails I don't know

I just found this... Miz Little is righto!

"When applying the acrylic nails they usually file off a great deal of your real nail making it super thin but easier for the acrylic to stick. Because of this, when you get them taken off your nails will be very very thin. Given time they will grow out and the thin will fall off and you will have your regular nail. I've never heard any long term damage by getting acrylic nails, but if you don't plan to keep them - they will be thin and brittle for awhile after you get rid of them."

    Ew, brittle nails!

As an alternative, you could just paint your nails with a clear nail polish.. and maybe even paint the tips white, so it's essentially the same effect.

    useful nail care tips!

    Nail Care Tips: The DO'S

DO drink plenty of water each day. It's good for your general health and a well hydrated body contributes to healthy nails. Cracked nails may indicate the need for greater fluid intake.

DO apply varnish remover before applying nail polish. This removes any grease on the surface of the nail and gives extra life to the nail polish, so make sure you do this regardless of whether there is old polish on your nails or not.

DO take vitamin supplements unless your doctor advises otherwise due to other health considerations. Vitamins A, C, E, and B12 are especially important. Additionally, calcium, zinc, iron, protein, and folic acid will help avoid white marks appearing on the nails and prevent nails from becoming brittle. Research the foods you need to provide you with these essential vitamins and supplements.

DO use a good quality buffer preferably once a week, no more than twice a week. Be sure not to buff too vigorously and not for too long to avoid damaging the nail. Just a brief gentle buff before applying nail polish can help prevent the polish from peeling due to a rough or uneven surface on the nail.
