Default Thinking of dyeing my hair for the first time!

This is one of those things that if you've done once, it's no longer a big deal to do again and again... and can oftentimes become addictive!

But I've never dyed mine before and wasn't planning on it... I've got a nice deep brown color... But yesterday I looked in the mirror and thought it looked so DULL! I'm thinking it's because we've had winter for practically the past five years around here...

Anyway, do YOU dye your hair, and would you recommend it to others? If I dyed it, I would stick to a shade similar to my own (or darker), but more... ALIVE-looking.

I guess I'm worried about it looking a) fake and b) not as nice as my natural color.

I get mine colored, but ugh, I have gray hair. I think a lot for my age. Anywho, yes I would recommend it. If you stick to natural colors, no worries on it looking fake.

I love going in and getting my hair done. I normally get highlights put in right around this time of year until the fall, then go one color (as close to my natural as I can get) for the winter.

I recommend for your first time to go into a hair salon where the stylists are trained mixers (don't know if that's the correct term) - as in they can create the color themselves and do not need to rely on someone else to make the proper color. When the hairstylist knows exactly what the color is and what goes into it, then they can also be sure that it goes in the best places throughout your hair for the best color possible. A salon like Eveline Charles would be great - expensive, but worth it. Then just ask for your color numbers and go to a different salon when it is time for a touch up and tell them those colors - then you don't have to spend the same $$ but you get the same color.

I've not been my natural color since I was oh somewhere between 11 and 13. My parents told me that as long as it was clean, they didn't give a rats arse what I did with it. And I did everything! Well, everything except black. I have been every single color of the rainbow and through high school and my wrestling career I was known as Rainbow Bright because my hair was never less than 3 colors at a time.

Nowadays I stick to a more natural color. My natural is an icky mouse brown so I kick it up a huge notch (while still looking natural) to a deep brunette with red base. You'll want to talk to a hair technician who knows what dye will work the best with your natural color - ash colors should not go with orange tones, and like mine, red tones will boost it (orange makes it look horrrrrrible!).

***Make sure that when you go into the hairdresser (DO go to a hairdresser for the first time - a self job may not work out the best and you'll have to go to a hairdresser to get it fixed if you get a horseshoe curve or the wrong base color) that she/he knows EXACTLY what you want before they do it.***

    Good luck and have fun!!

I just started coloring mine a little over two years ago, after I turned 50. I started getting white hairs at 22. Just a few for a long time and then I had a stripe of it - all in one place. Then it started to spread...
I did just what Bella recommended and went to the best colorist in the city and told him to figure what would be the best color. (why go to the best and then try to tell them how to do it?) We discussed my chemical sensitivities and spent a good long time selecting the best color and custom mixing it. It was fantastic. You would have never imagined it wasn't my natural color. Alas, it wasn't cheap and my budget couldn't take too much of it, I had it done twice and then got up the nerve to start doing it myself. I used a semi premanent dye, as the permanent ones will cross the skin barrier.
Just recently I started using henna, I like the color but will have to do maintence on it just about weekly.

I've been pleased with the results.

if you can afford to go to a hair dresser then do that.

if you cant then use a semi permanent tint like movida, something that says it lasts twenty four washes.
they're more...see through than permanent dyes so you get the 'alive' look without actually damaging or changing the colour of your hair too much.

also find out whether your skin tone is warm or cool.
if its warm gold and peach will suit you - hold up some jewellery or a piece of fabric near your face.
if its cool then silver and pink will suit you.

if you're warm coloured then go for an orangey tint
if you're cool then go for a more blue toned colour (this can be confusing but reds can still be blue toned)

most dyes say warm brown or cool chestnut
so you can choose from that.

the right colour will enhance your skin/eyes/face etc
the wrong one will completely wash you out.

    good luck

I dyed once and it's nice but never dyed since then..I suggest you go to a salon at first they will tell you what color is good for you.

    Hi guys

It depends upon your age which color you should select and my advise is that you should not dye your hair but have a habit of oil instead.

    Thanks

Um,ashamed to say,Since i was 13,ive dyed my hair many colors. lol I started streaking it blonde, then i dyed the underneath black, then dyed the top red, then all of it red, then dark pink,And as of last week,a dark dark brown, but left the bottom half black.Im a light brunnette naturally, and going a bit darker makes it look so much cuter.I think if you did your hair like that it would look nice. I do it all myself too,and never had to go to a salon.

Mes, it's not brown, I just looked at your photographs here, your avatar and man, it's as grey as grey can be, quit lying

Okay, you know I am blonde, through and through, up until 3 years ago when I decided to go brunette and I have never, ever, looked back.

So, firstly, I think if you've never died your hair before, you kind of think "safe", your colour is nice, it does suit you but I'm not sure if you want to dye it because of the rich gloss that will gleem for 6 - 8 weeks, then to only have to do it again and again, or whether what you really need, is to start to use hot oils, better conditioners, hair shine spray?

There is a spray, after you dry your hair that you can spray on and it does shine.. I use it

So, firstly think on those notes and if you decide it's only the shine, then go and seek out the variety of things you can do to gain that.

If it's a change however, try highlights first.. This gets you used to seeing something "different" and there is nothing wrong with " a little fake " .. It's exciting to experiement and it often changes the way we look in a better way.. If that's the case, with your natural beauty, I would go for deep cherry highlights, that brings a glossy deep red look in the sun, or light, whilst still maintaining your natural colour, as aposed to blonde streaks which defeats the " I don't want that fake look"..
