I don't know if you have Priceline in the UK, but when I bought my first lipstick, I went in there. They were very helpful, and went through lots of colours and types with me, and taught me how to put it on.
If you can, maybe find a store that will do that for you, it makes life a lot easier if you can try some first. Then when you take one home, you know that you're happy with it.
