I agree, that Nioxin is good. Its probably better than Paul Mitchell for your circumstance. ie thinning hair due to meds.

Is this actually good for african american hair?

Ok First get rid of the pantene. I got to a spa to get my hair done and pay a tone of money ( why because I am stupid HAHAH) and I got yelled at for using it. Pantene has a form of plastic in it that coats your hair and when you use your hair dryer, curling iron or straightner it literally melts it to your hair and then breaks off with your hair. I am 21 and I have had some hair loss from diff medications and I have used the very expensive salon products and spent up to about 30 bucks on shampoo that did work and I only payed for the name. I found one thing that works and the scent is amazing ..... Victorias Secret Sexy Volumizing shampoo and Conditioner ... my fiance has comment on the change because the way my hair looks but also the scent. I started off just with the shampoo and conditioner but now I have the entire line... plus they are having a great sale right now where you get 3 products for $21 that is awesome i say. Good luck and I hope this helps

I had the same problem from that drug. Lost a big spot at the crown of my head. I agree with everyone stay away from the pantene. (great for pretreating spots in cloths). For the last few years I have been using Alterna Caviar Shampoo. It is EXPENSIVE. I have all my hair back. Looks and feels wonderful and smells great.

    Welcome Buterfly 54...

The thread you chose to reply to is very old and those people are no longer here.

The first thing you have to ascertain is why you are losing hair...

I know stress can do it as well as it being hereditary, however, I located this information as well.

Perhaps first see if any of this makes sense, speak to your Doctor...if any of the below is what you feel may be the cause...

    Causes of hair loss

A hormonal problem is a major cause of falling hair in women. When the delicate balance between androgens and estrogens is disturbed, it can lead to falling hair. One of the common situations of heavy hair loss is just after delivering a baby. High levels of certain hormones during pregnancy are responsible for keeping hair fall to a minimum. But soon after when the hormones return to earlier levels, the normal cycle of hair fall resumes.

Other conditions that give rise to heavy hair fall are medications for chemotherapy and anti depressants and birth control pills. Oral contraceptive pills that are more androgenic can cause hair loss as a side effect. An overactive or under-active thyroid gland can also be a cause for hair loss. The hair cells tend to shut down to redirect energy elsewhere when the body finds itself in a critical situation.

Fungal infections can also cause hair loss. Diseases such as diabetes or lupus can manifest in early symptoms such as severe hair loss. Systemic illnesses such as hepatic disease and Crohn's disease are known to cause severe hair fall. Individuals produce less hair as they grow older and it is more liable to dryness and breakage. Improperly done coloring, perming and straightening treatments cause hair to fall out. Tight ponytails or braids can also cause hair loss especially around the forehead.

Nutritional factors such as starvation, yo-yo dieting and crash diets can result in diffused hair loss. A deficiency of Iron and Zinc can also manifest in falling hair and can be diagnosed by a simple blood test.

I use Avalon Organics biotin enriched shampoo for thinning hair and the matching conditioner...get it from any health store like whole foods or online too. Its all organic and has great ingredients to cleanse your scalp and help it to regrow.

Rubbing coconut oil into your scalp has been said to help LOTS of people w/ hair thinning, just research it online, or try it for a month and see if it works...aloe vera gel rubbed into the scalp is said also to fix that...both have lots of vitamins. Use organic shampoos as the chemical rich junk shampoos will make your hair fall out fast.

AND get a chlorene filter unit for your shower. Chlorene is the #1 reason most lose their hair...someone said somewhere...so keep the water healthy and dont use HOT water on your head ever, try to use as cold or cool as you can stand...hot water damages your pores on your head, they are fragile.

Pantene is a terrible shampoo. Do not believe the marketing ads on TV. It's BS. Pantene's main ingredient is Amonium Laurel Sulfate which is damaging to your hair and scalp. Read the ingredient list of the bottle to see it for yourself. The good this ingredient. Nioxin is great and also MYN is great. Both worked for me. And stay away from pills that mess with your hormones. As you know it makes your hair fall out. It did for me too. Buy a chlorine filter for your shower head. Chlorine is very damaging to your hair, skin and lungs. Lungs because you are breathing in the fumes in the steam. And start taking a Biotin supplement. I take 5000 mcg.

    Default Thin hair

I'm 62 and my hair is really, super fine and not much of it. After reading all of these posts (I've been using Pantene Volume shampoo) and I think I will try the Paul Mitchel line.

My hair is also no longer shiny. I just love to see a healthy head of hair and it's sheen. Any more recommendations????
    Alice
