How often do you wash it? Do you use conditioner? What hair type do you have ... oily? normal? dry?

Try washing it every other day, or just washing the roots. If it's poofy, it's probably dried out.
Or you could use some products, like leave-in conditioner. If it doesn't make you feel too girly.

In that case ... I hear tell John Freida products work amazing. I've never used them.
Herbal Essences has a great leave-in conditioner for long hair (look for the red pump bottle, "Long Term Relationship")
And there are plenty of anti-frizz or anti-humidity creams. I use whatever that brand that's always in green bottles is. I had to start using all this mess when I dyed my hair.
And emo and/or scene boys are not allowed to use gel if they have long hair, just so you know :P

invest in a flat iron that heats up 400 degrees plus. it will do wonders.wont take you anymore time to get ready. or find a stylist who knows about permanent straightening or perming. you can tame the hair by processing it either way..but never BOTH processes! then all you will need is to get touch ups on your new growth to maintain it....also. getting the right cut (poss a razor cut) can shape the hair and help it style better.

Gel is really outdated. There are better ways to style hair.
You could use it for spiky hair ... but for long hair? It would make it look awful, not to mention dry it out. Nobody should use gel in their hair, really, at least not the old kind that just dries out your hair.

No men should wear skin tight trousers and pointy shoes either, but I digress <_<...

As for long hair, just condition it a bit, if it's oily wash it a lot, if it's not don't dry it out by washing it too much, comb it every now and again, don't believe hairdressers money spinning scheme that cutting hair makes it grow faster...

I'm a guy and my hair is starting to work it's way past my armpits now >
