most birth controls will cause you to gain a couple of pounds except IUD i think. IUD is inserted into your cervix and uterus and can stay put for years but can sometimes cause problems with having more kids. The depo will most definatly cause you to gain weight. most women gain about an average of 5lbs a year (I was overweight starting it and gained 70lbs in 2.5 years so be careful!) . you take the shot once every 3 months. For the first 3-6 months most people have spotting in between periods, but after a year most women stop having periods. After stopping the shot it usually takes at least 6 months to conceive. oral, patch, or ring birth control are all pretty much the same. If you smoke you shouldn't use the patch tho because risk of stroke is increased with it. and there is the Norplant. it's kind like 3-5 matchstick size implants placed under the skin in your arm to put hormones in your system. It can last 5-7 years. the problems are that it's pretty invasive. I've also heard of the implants moving around and doctors having to search for them to remove them which isn't very comfortable.
and ther are always condoms, spermicide, etc. that have no hormonal effects.
