My 16 year old daughter did not ever really have periods, so after a couple years of provera, her doctor decided that she should try YAZ, to see if it would sort if trigger a regular cycle. It did regulate her cycle, but I believe it also may have caused many health issues that have yet to resolve. She immediately felt like she was having hot flashes, headaches and coordination problems. She has been a dancer for 11 years, and suddenly could not hold her balance, or stretch without being out of breath. She was also having extreme mood swings- laughing, arguing and crying all within a 30 minute time frame- and sleeping for hours every afternoon after school. She developed a rash down her neck. She was having trouble concentrating and would also become anxious and fearful (NEVER a problem in the past) In addition to this she gained 15 pounds, was covered in stretch marks and went from a 34C to a 34 DD. She refused to continue YAZ after the three month trial- and we returned to her doctor. Everyone insisted it could not be caused by YAZ- The problem is that she has been off of YAZ since OCT 15th- and her symptoms are actually worse- she sleeps 18 hours a day, is having trouble with word recall and speech, constant leg and muscle pain, her hair is all falling out, anxiety(panic attacks and fear) and crying (true tantrums- which she did not have as a 2 year old) headaches, 'bulked up upper arms (always VERY skinny before) - she does not feel well enough to do all of the normal things she always did with friends- shopping , email, texting..... she stays by my side all of the time- AND we have taken her to a number of doctors and everyone says all of her hormone levels are normal, and they send us on to someone else. She has missed three months of school and we have no clear answers from anyone. I know many posters here have had some of the same symptoms, but I wonder if anyone continued with problems AFTER they stopped YAZ- I am at my wits end and do not know what to do ......any feedback is welcome, please.

Wow....as a mother I'm sure you are terribly concerned right now, and rightfully so. I took Yaz for several years, and it worked great for me up until the last few months before I stopped taking. I started having spotting and breakouts more than normal, so I switched...but certainly nothing uncommon. I'm sure there are people that experience rare side effects...but I'll have to do some research.

I'm a bit concerned that this has nothing to do with birth control, and perhaps the doctors are looking at the wrong things. Have you taken her to her general practitioner or family doctor?

You came to the right place. And you may even find someone who has experienced almost exactly this and can truly give you some advice in the right direction.

Also...has your daughter taken the Gardisil vaccination?

Sorry, here I am again. Just trying to find out more information from you. Have her doctors checked her potassium levels?

She actually has had her Gardisil vac- the third one was given at the same appointment as YAZ- which she began a few days later.

We are concerned that many of her symptoms actually started a few years back when she had her first period- and then it stopped three months later and that is when I noticed changes in her hair texture, and her concentration level.
she also put on weight , and had always been underweight. Her pediatrician just said it was 'puberty....but things continued to get strange- In the last 2 years she has gained almost 30 pounds- She is a fanatical label reader and up until she started with the muscle aches, worked out 7 days a week- She was in 5 dance classes and did the elliptical and pilates plus she would throw in workout tapes to break up the boredom. No matter what she did she continued to gain weight.
The things that really concern me are the neurological changes (speech issues, memory issues and 'tripping') - These have been going on for about a year now -before YAZ, but seem worse since she took it.

We have been to her pediatrician, my family practice doctor, her gyn, an endocrinologist, and a neurologist - most of her blood work has been 'normal' (and she has had lots of tests performed- blood, urine, Ct scans, MRI) but nothing comes up abnormal. She does have a growth on her pituitary gland- however all tests for cortisol do not show increased levels....so they have decided against Cushings. We have another endocrine appointment this week- and have called the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic for appointments. No one really seems interested in dealing with this- we have heard "She is a teenager" so many times I could scream.

I have heard people concerned about Gardisil..... not sure if she really has associated issues here though.

    Thanks for your time!

I know how frustrating this all must be for you, her...and the rest of your family. It kills me how doctors are so aloof. Its like if you're young they blow everything off and say "its puberty"......but when you're old they blow everything off as "aging". They look for the smallest things and often disregard what could be something more serious. My father was diagnosed with a gall stone, laid in the hospital for 14 hrs before the doctors did an EKG only to discover he had actually had an uncommon heart attack. He died 20 minutes after the EKG results came back. When will doctors ever learn?
The "rare" diseases and such are often overlooked because they're "rare", but hey, someone gets them at some point or they wouldn't be known, right?
I was going to ask if you had talked to a neurologist and an endocrinologist, but it sounds like you've been extremely thorough. I didn't realize her symptoms began prior to any of the BC or Gardisil. The reason I mentioned gardisil is because on one of those medical mystery shows I heard the story of a young female who began having extreme fatigue, loss of memory, depression, and the constant feeling of being ill. This went on for months and she literally thought she was dying. I can't remember the other symptoms she mentioned but eventually she pinpointed the onset of her symptoms to after she took her 3rd gardisil shot. She went to every kind of doctor known to man and they all told her she was fine, diagnosed her with depression, even accused her of being crazy. There are many lawsuits right now due to other similar situations such as this. The bad part, is that the vaccination is new enough that it really can't be proven. But this girl said she has no doubt, not one single doubt that this shot took her from being a young vibrant woman to an old sickly woman that couldn't handle every day normal functions.
As you, the neuroligcal issues would be a high concern of mine. Keep persisting, keep pushing, and keep on refusing to take no for an answer. A mothers intuition about her child is right....it's nature...and you're right for not doubting it.
Good luck on the visit this week......keep us posted. We're all like family here...and aside from that this is a wonderul medium to get your story out there and hopefully prevent others from going through the same thing.

    Default problems with yaz

mommamia, I know exactly what you are going through. My 17 year old daughter was on Yaz for 4 mos., She developed severe joint and muscle pain, depression, anxiety, extremely vivid dreams and nightmares, 20 lb. weight gain, missed months of school, very rarely went out of the house, increased mood swings, etc. Doctor's did multiple blood & unrine tests, found elevated Sed rates, positive ANA, making them think possibly autoimmune disorder or disease, during all of the testing, I started researching problems with Yaz, as all of her problems, coincided with beginning Yaz. Consequently I had her stop stop Yaz mid-cycle, we still didn't have a diagnosis, some blood tests would point to one thing, but correlating tests would come back negative. Finally a rheumatologist had a complete analyzer done, which showed positive perietal cell antibodies, which usually indicates pernicious anemia, however, she was negative for anemia. Another round of blood work finally showed she has severe vitamin D deficiency, she was prescribed 50,000 iu of vitamin D, once a week for 8 weeks, then it will be once a month. We are going back to the Rheumatologist in 2 days and should have the rest of the results from her last round of blood work, hopefully the vitamin D deficiency is the only problem. That being said, after everything I've learned about Yaz, I have no doubt that is what started all of this, and if you have not been to a rheumatologist, yet, please do so immediately. After being off of Yaz for 2 months, some of her symptoms started to improve, but are not completely gone. She has only taken 1 dose of vitamin D so far. Also, I have her taking B12, a multivitamin and am ready to start her on Calcium Magnesium. I wish you luck, and will keep you and your daughter in my prayers.

    Default My experience with Yaz

My personal experience with Yaz was terrible. After 5 months on it, I look back and realize that the symptoms were creeping up on me and I didn't really notice it at the time. But it came to a head when I caught a stomach bug and kept telling my doctor I felt very nervous, anxious, and fearful all of the time.

Even after coming off of the Yaz, I continued to experience severe anxiety, derealization, irrational fear, elevated heart rate, and appetite loss. Many other women have experienced the same.

I highly recommend you do a google search for "Yasmin Survivors Forum" (Yaz and Yasmin are nearly identical) and read through the threads there. If you want to help other women, please visit the "newest lawsuit info- feb 2009" thread and contact the lawyer listed there. There is growing interest in the number of women who are experiencing serious psychological effects from using this pill. Feel free to contact me as well.

I took Yaz back in 2005 but I still remember the horrible issues it caused me after taking it for only two months. I gained just over 30 lbs (and I'm a very active person, pretty healthy eater), slept 10+ hours a day with random naps here and there, was always dizzy, had to quit all the sports I played because of the dizziness, was doing horrible in college because I was always dozing off, horrible mood swings, severe depression - I was basically just a completely different person. I continued with the pill and didn't talk to anyone about it until after I'd been on it for right around 4 months. My gyno took me off as soon as I told her my symptoms, and after a couple months, everything seemed to be back to normal.

I wouldn't advise anyone to take that sorry excuse for a birth control pill.

    Default Please check this out!

Those of you who have just recently started taking Yaz or some other form of birth control and are having health issues........DID YOU HAVE THE GARDASIL VACCINE WITHIN THE LAST YEAR? There are over 50,000 reports of adverse effects reportedly from Gardasil. Check out the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System for varification. The events reported range from chronic and severe fatigue, muscle pain, weakness, paralysis, joint pain, SEIZURES, digestive problems, sudden onset of anxiety and depression, personality changes, rash and even death. Your symptoms may not be from the BC but from the Gardasil Vaccine. For more information please visit....Home. My daughter has suffered from seizures and migraines since she recieved the Gardasil vaccine. She also suffers from chronic fatigue, muscle and joint pain and hair loss as a result of the Gardasil Vaccine she recieved. Google gardasil/seizures/fainting/paralysis and you will be amazed by the number of hits. Look into it and then decide if you may be yet another young, healthy, active young woman who has been injured by Gardasil.

    Default Have you researched this?

I feel for your distressing situation. It sounds like there is more going on with your daughter than just using Yaz or receiving Gardisil. Have you spoken to a Reproductive Endocrinologist? Those specialists have a huge amount of knowledge about Women's hormonal issues and may shed some light on this issue. I am concerned about your daughter's mental health issues as well....you may need to have a psychiatrist evaluate her as well for the depressive symptoms. I know that might sound harsh, but the reality is this: your daughter has stopped the birth control pills, so any POSSIBLE problems that might have been associated with it's use have been resolved after stopping them. I'm sorry things are so rough for your daughter (and you) and I hope you are able to get to the bottom of the problem soon. Listening to people who's personal situations seem related to what your situation is can be terribly distressing and can create more anxiety, so be careful of who you listen to online. I work with Women all the time and have seen what that can do to people's psychological well-being. Good luck!:

I've been taking Yaz for about 4 years and have not had any symptoms with it or noticeable changes in any of the areas you have mentioned. I really think it has something to do with Gardasil as Jukysarrn said. I refused to get the vaccine because of potential side affects in the future that were still unknown.

I would definitely check into that.
