Just wanted to share my experience with Depo Provera Injection. DP is a long term injection birth control. In most cases it stops your menstrual cycle completely. I started taking it at a very young age, not because of sexual activity, but because I needed to regulate my periods to manage pain and it was recommended by my doctor. I took it for 5 years and never had a period in that whole time. The first three years were blissful with no complications or side effects. Then, my hair started to become brittle and fall out. Over a period of time I started to have balding areas on my head. I couldn't figure out what was going on. Then I started to get sick all the time and my immune system basically crashed. I was taking vitamins and supplements thinking that I wasn't getting enough in my meals. I went online and did some research. I found that there were TONS of reports of these side effects being related to Depo Provera!! So I immediately stopped the injection! They say that it takes your body up to 1 year to get back to it's normal cycle. It took me 3 YEARS!! 3 YEARS to get my cycle back to a normal pattern. Not only that, but my hair did not start growing back until after the second year. I have been off the shot for 4 years now and my hair is finally looking filled in. I still have one spot that is growing in slowly (was the worst area), but it is an actual visual difference! Also, I am rarely sick anymore! I have decided that I am NEVER taking birth control EVER again. You just don't know what it's really doing to you until it's too late. Do your research when considering bith control. Search for personal experiences and do not rely souly on what the doctors say!

Angry Still having serious side effects!!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have done durther research on the side effects from Depo Provera. Although I have been off it for 5 years or so, I am starting to have new symptoms and serious conditions linked to Depo. I found a huge database of horror stories from women taking Depo and there is also a law suit against the makers because it causes osteoperosis. This drug is still on the market! Please... DO NOT TAKE IT! Take a look at this site...

    http://www.abcinternetmarketing.com/depo-provera/

Also, I would like to share a list of side effects I have suffered through the years up to now in the hopes that you will stay away from this stuff! I am looking for a new doctor who might have more sense to know what the problem is. If you check out the other site, you will see that I have about 98% of the symptoms these other women have!!

While on Depo: age 16 to 21
    severe migraine headaches
    weight gain
    immune system crash (recurring illnesses)
severe hair loss to the point of bald spots
    depression and anxiety
    no menstrual cycle
    NO sexual appetite

First three years off Depo: age 22 to 24
irregular heavy periods with unbearable cramping
hair loss stopped, but no regrowth
    immune system slowly improved
developed lower back and abdominal pain
developed hip and knee problems (including dislocation)
    slightly increased sexual appetite

The last 2 years: age 25 to present (27)
period has become regular with less cramping
hair has finally started to grow back slowly
    immune system seems great
    joint problems worsening
increased anxiety and panic, but no depression

In just the last 6 months:
    irregular heart beat
loss of memory and lack of focus
blurred vision and some times vision goes out for a few seconds
    dizziness
    SEVERE hot flashes and hives
    extreme anxiety and panic attacks

My concern is that there seems to be no answer to fixing my problems. My doctor just wanted to have me take more medication and I am totally against that! If anyone had any ideas other then eating healthy, please let me know!

Smile This is just one option

    Hi there Female Prod,
I am a chiropractic assistant. I have work with my doctor for over a year now. I would have never guess that seeing him would make a difference in my period cramps or lower back pain, but it did. I use to have period cramps that would put me in bed for almost my whole period which was 7 to 10 days. But what I learned from working in this profession is that you brain controls every part of your body. The way that you brain communicates with you body is through your spinal cord and nervous system. Now what happens when u have thing interfering with those signals is that it goes to the affected areas. I would like to explain this more to you if you are willing to listen. Please Take this into consideration. I know from my own experaince that it is one of the most effective treatments I have had to date. And many women in my clinic will back me up on that one. I hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks for the advice. I am a bit paranoid about people messing around with my joints and bones. I know, it's probably totally unnecessary, but it just bothers me. I won't even crack my knuckles... let alone my back. Haha. I have heard that accupuncture is helpful as well.

Yes, it is infamous for causing weight gain and headaches. I am also glad that you got off of it. I wish more women knew what that stuff does to you.

I was on it about over a year, and I had gained about 30lbs. X( IF I knew what I know now I would never have been on it, even thou it seems like so easy, a shot every 3mths and loss of your period, sounds wonderful but it is not!!

I am really glad I read this post. I have had no sex drive, weight gain, anxiety and depression and i have felt this was something wrong w/ me. I just started taking the shot with in the past 6 months. I have also had the headaches and leg cramps not sure if that is related but I will check into a diffrent type of Birth Control.

Yes, headaches are a side effect of Depo Provera. I had dibillitating migraine headaches repeatedly while on Depo. Not anymore! I have not experienced the leg cramping, but have heard many women on Depo suffer from that as well.
