So. I was on Depo Provera for around 5 years. I stopped getting the shot because in September of last year(2008), I severly broke my ankle. The dr. said it looked like I jumped off a building because it was so shattered. All I did was twist my ankle around. Anyways, depo causes bone loss. No one ever told me "You need to be taking calcium supplements" so I never knew. My dr. just told me that the side effects were when you get older, ostoperosis. I was 16 didnt really think I was going to start losing my bones! Anyways, of course none of the dr.'s want to associate my shattered ankle with the Shot, they said one thing the night I was in the ER, but other than that, when I bring it up their like "nooo".
So I wanted to get onto the Pill. I went in and got my yearly pap smear and talked to a new dr. about my options. I have high blood pressure, but it seems to be only when I am at the dr. cause I have tested it when I'm not and it's fine. I dont take the meds they give me for it. So he said no on the pill. He wanted me to get Mirena. Well, Mirena is the same hormone as the depo shot, so no. I know their is a copper one too. But the cost is up there, and I wouldnt want it for 5 plus years. I want to have kids in about a year or so. So lately Ive just been using condoms. BTW, I am in a commited relationships, weve been together for 4 years and plan on getting married when we can afford it lol
So I got off depo in Feb. and now it's June almost July. I still have not had a period. The last few days, I have had discharge that's somewhat dark brown, but very light maybe once or twice. Anyone think that maybe my period will start again soon? If you were on the depo for years, how long did it take you to have your period?
Im just scared that I have permantely screwed my body up. It's my fault for just trusting a dr. and not researching it, but I was a kid, and I liked the idea of no periods. Now I can't wait to have a period again for the reasurrance that everything is working! If they would have told me the side effects, I wouldnt have done it. I have gained a lot of weight since those days too. And when I started it, OMG, I was a total BI***! Everyone just figured it was because I was 16-17 but then last year my sis got on Depo and wow, same thing again.
Anyways, thanks for reading that really long post!![]()
I just have to say this....every woman is different, but, heres my story...
I gave birth to my son in '99 and went straight onto the depo. Three years later we decided to try for our second child. I did not get my scheduled shot and three months later I was prego!
Now my Daughter is 6. I have been on Depo for over 6 years. We are now trying for another. I also (like you) did not take my shot in Feb of this year. I just had my first period since. My body seemed to be in a turmoil up until last week. sore breasts, cramping, bloating...
Now we are on a "wait and see" mindset.. So it did take longer to return to normal, but it may be due to me being 31 this time. Good luck!!
