Hi. I was on Depo-Provera for a little more than a decade and absolutely loved it. I had no period whatsoever during that time. However, around Easter of this year, I decided to donate my eggs and therefore had to stop taking Depo in order to begin ovulating and menstruating again. I wasn't sure what would happen since I hadn't had a period in so long.
I was due for another shot in April but didn't take it. In the beginning of September, I started menstruating. It continued for 24 days. In the middle of the menstruation I became engaged and therefore changed my mind about donating eggs, so I took my Depo shot. It didn't alter the cycle at all (as far as I know, considering I bled for 24 days straight). I got about a week's break and then began again at the same time in October. I'm still going strong and, as of now, I'm 21 days into the cycle this month.
Some of my friends have told me to go see a doctor, as I might need a D&C to kind of "clear things out" since I hadn't menstruated in so long. I wouldn't mind doing that at all but I don't want the doctor to refuse to write me another prescription for Depo.
I'm wondering if this kind of bleeding is normal after such a prolonged use of Depo, and if Depo caused a lack of period before, will it do so again? If so, how long does it take to kick in?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
I was on Depo for almost 3 years, thats not nearly as long as you, but its still long. As soon as i got off, i went on nuva ring and i was scared that i would have irregular bleeding like i did when i first got on the shot. But, just as the doctor told me, my period become perfectly regular. It might be different for you since you were on it for so long, but maybe you just need something different to regulate it again? Sorry if this doesnt help
