I'm nineteen and in need of birth control. Not Necessarily because I want to be sexually active but more so because I live in a dorm and want fewer periods or atleast periods with less cramps. But I am not sure which birth control is right. Can anyone give me some advice? thank you.

Anything with hormones will give you lighter, less painful periods. The pill is the most common option, and there are low dose options, but if you intend to have sex, you need to take it every day...if you don't think you can remember, I'd go with the patch or Nuvaring.

Hormonal birth control is different for different people. Everyone reacts differently and what works for one person may not work for another. Hormonal birth control will usually result in lighter periods but for some it certain pills or very rarely all forms will just make them bleed for longer or even constantly until they switch. Lybrel made me bleed lightly more days than not, increasingly more and more after sex the longer I was on it, and occasionally extremely heavy. Ortho tricyclen lo made me bleed heavy for a week and less for another week. Yasmin makes it so I hardly bleed at all and only for 4days. Other people find they can't stand the side effects of yasmin and do wonderful on something that I can't take. You really can't know what works best for you until you take it.

Start combing through the internet, researching different brands. And this forum also has a ton of topics on various birth control methods that you could look through. When I was a student I had to also weigh costs, since for some reason there was a HUGE range depending on the brand (and for essentially the exact same pill composition... sigh).

It's hard to say which birth control would be better for you since every woman is different. What works perfect for me may be a disaster for you. Like a previous poster said, Yasmin works wonderful for her - but Yasmin was horrible for me. For lighter or less frequent periods though, you could ask your doctor about the birth control pill. Something like Lybrel or perhaps Seasonique/Seasonale. Or, if taking a pill each day isn't convenient for you, there's Nuva-Ring or Ortho-Evra (the patch). Be aware though, that according to the manufacturer of Ortho-Evra, the patch introduces a 60% higher level of estrogen into the bloodstream as compared to the birth control pill. If you're looking for something more long-term, there's Mirena (a hormonal intrauterine system worn for 5 years) or Implanon (an implant placed in the upper arm for 3 years, also the most effective form of birth control available.) Some women have had lighter, easier periods with them, others may have the opposite effect. Finding the right birth control that also controls your cramps & bleeding can be trial and error - you may try several different pills that don't work with your body before finding the right one. Or, you may try a different method entirely (patch, ring, implant, ius) and it can work perfectly from the start.
