Hello! I have not been on the pill for years and years... I have started a relationship with the love of my life 2 months ago... I am going to see him for the first time in months (before we were just friends, and never did anything) so anyways, i'm flying on thursday to see him for the first time as a couple!!!. I went to the doctor last week to get the pill. I'm supposed to be getting my period around the beginning of January which sucks cuz obviously I want to have a lot of sex with him!!! So, I started taking the pill today... will this delay my period? I've been doing a lot of research online and it seems the answer is yes. But I just want to make sure! We will still be using protection as I'm sure it takes some time for the pill to become effective but all I'm worried about is not getting my period while I'm with him for a week. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hard to say. If this is your first pack, it may take a while for the hormones to adjust in your body. Theoretically, yeah, you shouldn't start for another 25 days or so (assuming you are on a 28 day pack).

Similarly so, yes, please do plan on using other protection for the duration of the first pack.

Technically the pill is going to start inhibiting your LH and FSH levels right away. This means it will prevent you from going through menstruation however if it is going to completely stop your period from happening I do not know because your body is already under the assumption that menstruation is going to happen very soon. It very well could stop your period though, but I think at the very least it is going to make it much lighter.

At minimum you will probably have spotting and some people do have their period on time at the same strength. You already have a thick uterine lining and egg in there. Your body will want to get rid of it. After you've been on the birth control for at least one pack it should lessen the lining and stop eggs from being released so your body does not need to or have as much to clean out. That's why it's suggested to start the first pack after your period ends and to use a backup method of birth control just in case especially if you don't follow that and start the pack at other times. It can take up to a few months for things to line up completely so you don't get spotting and are completely covered by the birth control.

Not to depress you but there is also the risk of side effects. You shouldn't start birth control for the first time expecting no problems. A couple types of pills I actually bleed through not only the inactive pills but also the first week of active pills. Others I had bleeding off and on the entire month with increasing larger amounts after sex. Some people can't take any form of pills. Most have to find the right one. Only a few can take every type of hormone without problems.
