Hi, could someone please give me your views. I have had the mirena coil in since jan 2007, i have always had a regular period with it in. However last month my period was due the last week in jan i began spotting like a brown discharge and i believed this to be the beginnning of my period. The problem is my period never came and i continued to have this spotting on and off for approximately 10days it was very light and i really didnt require the use of a pad. I am sexually active and would have intercourse about 3/4 times a week, my husband does not use condoms nor does he withdraw. I am now waiting for my period to come this month, however my breasts are very tender and i think i am running to the toilet more than usual. However i took a pregnancy test and it came back negative. Maybe it is only in my head that i am going to the toilet more! anyways what is your views, do you think i may be pregnant? Or why was my period just brown discharge if its always regular? I last gor my mirena checked over a year ago and everything was ok, i have never felt the strings on it and was told it was placed pretty high up in me. Does the mirena become less effective over time? I am really confused! Thanks

It should not lose effectiveness for at least 5years but it can slide out of position and cause problems. If it was already not quite sitting right you might want to have it checked again. they can also become embedded in the uterine wall over time although I've never heard that lessens effectiveness just makes it harder to remove. Personally I'd request an ultrasound if your insurance will cover it. A physical exam only goes so far and then they could also check for pregnancy.

I thought that with Mirena you wouldn't have a period at all. Brown blood means old blood. Are you in any pain? I too would advice you to see a doctor and have an ultrasound just in case. BTW I have ParaGard.

This seems like good advice. I have a Mirena and love it. No problems.
