This exact same thing is happening to me.... and I can't seem to find anybody to answer the question... anybody???
I have been on birth control for 3 years. I skipped my placebo pills 2 weeks ago so I could skip my period. Everything went as it normally does but 2 days ago I started spotting. Brown discharge, mostly. I have skipped my placebos before and this has never happened. I am very confused as to why I'm bleeding in the middle of my hormone pills. I know that it is common but I have been on the pill for so long, and it's never happened before.
Could something else be wrong or is the spotting probably just because I skipped my period?
Thanks

The only time I skipped placebo pills to avoid a period, I paid He** for it for the next two months. Skipping the pills gets your cycle totally off track, and it has to have time to get back on. If you've done it before and not had that happen, consider that a lucky strike because I don't believe that's most commonly the case.
You may spot the entire time until your next period. I did...and was crampy and bloated too. And you should definitely expect that to happen anytime you skip your placebo's, especially when your body is used to that period every mth.
Good luck!
Are your pills monophasic or triphasic ?(Meaning are they all one color then the sugar pills are white or a different color, or are they three different colors) Examples of monophasic pills are Yaz, LotrinFe28, Seasonale, Seasonique, Alesse. Examples of triphasic pills are: Ortho TryCyclen Lo, Yazmin, etc. It's easier to skip the placebo week if you have a monophasic pill. This means that there are the same amount of hormones in each pill and so your body just thinks it's getting the same amount every day. I've skipped 3-4 months just taking it continiously before with no problems.
I've heard of more problems for women who are taking triphasic pills however, and while you can skip the placebos on them, there seems to more incidences of breakthrough bleeding and spotting on them. This is because the level of hormones fluctuates every week with the different colors.
Was it bad to skip your placebos? Not really. Pretty much every woman does it at some point in her life. Many physicians argue that there is really no need for women to have a fake 'withdrawal' period every month. (Since some women still bleed while preg on the pill anyways, it's not a good indicator of not being pregnant.) The period one gets is just the absence of the hormones causing the lining that has built up to come out. The pills were designed for the placebo week to make women think that what they were doing was more natural and not pregnant (which is untrue for some women, who still bleed while pregnant) : to bleed meant one was still a fertile woman. This was in the '60's, and it still is that way.
Of course , every women's body reacts differently to the hormones in the pill. If the spotting continues for 2-3 months then I'd see a doctor. But occasional spotting from skipping placebo is really common.
When I had a breakthrough spotting (after going 5 months without a placebo)I bled very lightly until I took the actual placebo and then it stopped when I had a normal 'flow' on the pill. So maybe my body was telling me it wanted to get rid of the hormones for a little while.
Good luck!

If we could live without passion maybe we'd know some kind of peace... but we would be hollow... Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without passion we'd be truly dead.” -Joss Whedon
