thank you ladies for making/keeping up with this thread... it's insightful to know i'm not the only one that has had a similar experience with the iud. i had paragard inserted in april of this year & so far have had nothing but problems with it. i do not do very well with hormonal birth control and since my boyfriend and i are waiting to get pregant, i thought the iud was the perfect solution. boy was i wrong about that. all it's done for me is cause me headache after headache... besides the horrific pain i experienced with insertion, i developed a bacterial infection from it (which resulted in a 7 day course of antibiotics), following a yeast infection (another 3 day treatment). my boyfriend was having a difficult time becoming intimate with me because of the discomfort of the strings, so i got them cut shorter (which my ob said he would be willing to do if i found it neccisary). several days later i got my period & when i went to check for the strings (which i do after every cycle), they were gone! could it have fallen out when i used the bathroom and didn't notice? could it have become embedded in me somewhere? what if it's just floating around in there & not providing me sufficent protection? so i made yet another appointment with my doctor to get a professional opinion. he did a transvaginal ultrasound & there it was -- exactly where it should be. it has been a couple months now since the ultrasound and i still can't find the strings. obviously it's still in place because my boyfriend can still feel those stubborn little pokers, but it's bothersome that i can't feel for it when i find the need to. i plan on having it removed at my next appointment in january. aside from the fact it's been giving me incredible anxiety, i can't help but notice the discomfort i experience with it (especially after sex) & the heavy periods and increased discharge are not something i have been able to get used to. looks like it's back to the pill for me.
