Help ladies my OB is really pushing Essure

Almost 3 years ago I started having heavy bleeding. It would last 14 days out of every month. My Gyn at that time could not find a cause for it but he recommended a tubal and uterine ablation once I was done having kids. I got 3 more opinions and they all recommended the same thing. So I took fertility treatments got pregnant and had my third and final baby in March. My OB said he would do the tubal and ablation at the same time and I could schedule it at my 6 week Post Partum appt. Well that was yesterday. He's now decided that he doesn't want to do a tubal b/c he prefers doing Essure in the office instead. The ablation can be done in the office also. I'm adamant that I want a tubal. I've read horror stories about the Essure plus for some reason he says with the Essure I will have to wait 6 more weeks to have it done. A tubal can be done next week. I'm trying to avoid having another long painful 2 week cycle and If I go straight for the tubal and ablation I can. If I choose Essure I can't. But he's adamant that Essure is the best, least invasive easiest choice and he says he can't understand why I would want to be cut on. Pricewise a tubal and ablation in the hospital is all covered at 100%. The Essure and ablation in office is covered at 100% after my $20 copay.

He told me to talk it over with dh and let him know on Monday but my dh doesn't want me doing the Essure either.

His nurse waited until he left the room and said don't let him pressure you into the Essure. If you want a tubal just tell me and I'll schedule it and he'll do it no matter what.

I'm so torn. I can see his points. If the Essure works correctly and if it causes me no problems later then YES it would be easier than a tubal but I'm seeing a lot of problems where the Essure didn't work correctly. Plus IMO it's only been out since 2002. To me that's not long enough to trust it.

Any advice ladies?

Do what YOU want to do. I had a tubal last year, the best thing I could have ever done. Even after reading up on Essure, I knew it was something I wouldn't even give a second thought to.

With the tubal, I was in and out of the hospital in 5 hours or so, a little sore for a day or two, but that's it.

That's all there is to it, ring the nurse and inform her this is both you and your husband's decision, it's your body.

Every new proceedure has it's faults. The main thing I have read on the "essure failure" thread, is that one side was not blocked properly, pregnancy occured, or, pain afterwards..

Having said that, there has been successful essure proceedures as well, "essure success stories", is another thread here and Ashibaby has successfully had that proceedure.

From what I can gather, it appears that the Doctors are not trained enough, (some) and as such, can't quite get it right.

Also, they are not advising the patients enough on what happens, before, during and after and if I am correct, most insist on a Depo Shot before hand, perhaps that is the wait this Doctor is talking about...

If you decide to have Essure, know exactly all the facts....and that the Doctor that is performing it, has performed it on several occasions, not a handful.

Your body, your choice. If you feel that you want the Tubal, go with that. Don't let doctors push you around. You are the one in charge of your body, and the one that pays for their salaries.

There is evidence that the company is giving the drs huge incentives to use this product. The drs make much more on the essure than doing the tubals. Some drs have entered into agreements with the company that they will receive incentives as long as they perform so many procedures per year. From what you said the nurse said I'd be concerned that she knows why the dr is pushing this & may have some knowledge of problems with this procedure. IT IS YOUR BODY! Not the drs, not mine. Do what you feel comfortable with.

It just gets worse. I went to Essure.com and tried to find my physician. He's not on their list. His partner is but he isn't. He's not listed and here's the message it gives me:

If your doctor is not listed here it means they haven't been Essure certified yet.

Gah. So not only do I NOT want Essure but I'm starting to feel scared of my own doctor. I mean why would he recommend something that he's not even certified to do? I do plan to call Essure today though just to make sure he's not certified. If it turns out he's not than I plan to have a long talk with him b/c it's just not fair for him to push something that he shouldn't be doing to begin with.

Can you... switch docs altogether?

If I found that out about my doc, I wouldn't trust him with ANYthing.

I'm thinking about it. I'm losing trust in him. Now he just delivered my baby. I had pre eclampsia and had to be induced at 37 weeks. He took such GREAT care of me during my pregnancy and things turned out perfect so I was feeling so confident with him until this

Before making your decision I would find out why you are bleeding so much. This might cause problems regardless of the procedure you get done. It might even make one completely impossible. If they can't find a reason ask what other tests can be done, try even more doctors, check with Universities since the professors always do continued research and most new medical problems are found through Universities. The last thing you want is to go through with either one of the procedures and find out they make the problem worse. Good luck and hopefully you get the answers you need.
