I've been debating whether or not to switch birth controls since I'm dealing with some bad weight gain with the pills I am on. We have a family friend who is on the Nuvaring. She said it didn't make her gain weight or anything but after looking at the side effects of the birth control itself, I don't know if I really want to try it. I've also thought about getting the IUD but my mom doesn't think my doc will give it to me since I haven't had kids yet but I don't know.

Any advice Nuvaring users or past users?

All hormonal birth control will effect each person differently and has the potential to cause weight gain. You'll find some people who lose weight and some people who gain weight on pretty much every version of hormone based birth control from pills, shots, nuva rings, and iuds. It's a gamble. So far every type I've tried has slowed the weight I gain from my sleeping meds. Most of them have the same potential side effects. I wouldn't say one is noticeably safer or worse than the other. They just depend on different factors.

Nuva rings were convenient. No remembering to take pills (I forget about 1 a week) and easy to skip my period without having to get a special prescription from the doctor. However lots of people, including myself, find the ring to be too big. You have to position it just right and for some it still sticks out all the time which can be irritating. Best to get a sample one from the doctor to see exactly how well it fits you. Also since it barely fit inside it rubbed the end of my urethra during sex and had to be removed every time. Sometimes I'd forget or didn't want to bother putting it back in right away. Personally if my husband hadn't gotten a vasectomy I'd have gone back on yasmin and just made off with some extra packs from the doctor or waited to start it so I could still skip my period when necessary. All you can do is try it and see whether it works for you.

I have no problem remembering my pills, I just want this weight gone. I gained 20 or so pounds after getting on my pill and that was about 3 years ago.
There seems to be a lot more side effects with Nuva Ring than my own pill I'm on right now and I'm not sure I like that. Our family friend loves it but I don't know. I'm still debating on it, its not a for sure thing. Maybe when I go to my doc the next time I'll talk to her about the different things because I'm so tired of this weight. It's ugly!
