Default Depo Shot is making me insane

I just got my first depo shot about a month ago and have been slowly losing my mind ever since...

I was on my period when I got the shot and havn't stopped bleeding (or at least spotting) since. I know thats a normal side effect but I'm hoping it goes away soon so I can actually have sex or want to have sex since I'm on birth control for that reason!

But faaar more intense than that is my mood swings. I am a sensitive person in general, but I CANNOT STOP CRYING ALL THE TIME!! Movie previews, bad commercials, my boyfriend not saying the exact thing I want to hear... you name it, I've cried about it.

I have a boyfriend, he's amazing, the kindest most wonderful person I've ever met. We've only been together about 5 months and I'm not someone who usually is excited to be in relationships, however this time it's great and I feel like I'm going to ruin everything. I convinced myself he was cheating on me (sooo not real) I convinced myself he didn't love me anymore... that he doesn't want to be around me (which at this point I wouldn't blame him)

Also prior to this I was on the nuva ring which also made me crazy but my Dr. said Depo would be different and better.

Point is I feel like a crazy person and am actually normally a really calm, nice, easy going person usually (hard to believe I know)

will this go away? How long should I expect to feel this way? Someone help me feel sane again please!

I had the EXACT SAME ISSUES when I was on Yaz and Ortho Tri Cyclen. I was convinced my boyfriend was cheating, constantly worrying about stuff, because so jealous about anyone my boyfriend talked to, crying all the time, blaming myself for stuff that isnt my fault. I too am normally a very calm person, but the pill just screwed me up. So I went off the pill, and my anxiety issues didnt go away, so I saw my doctor and I am on a low dose antidepressant for a couple months, and will come off and see how i do then... i now know i cannot use a birth control that is hormonal. I will be looking into a Copper IUD eventually. Talk to your doc though!

I was on depo for about a year and I swear it is the worst thing ever. It made me a complete lunatic, to put it nicely.

My suggestion, get off of it and find another form of BC, that is probably the only way you will feel sane again. Some people have good experiences with it, some have horrible experiences with it, but it seems more people are in the horrible boat.

I didn't have any of those types of experiences with it when I was on Depo several years ago, it just made me gain lots of weight (no thanks).

i think it really just depends on what effect the hormones have on you. when i started taking loestrin 24, i went totally nuts. i'm on the LOWEST dosage you can have on that birth control, and for about a month and a half i just lost it. i was bawling my eyes out all the time, not to mention i just had come off of a 2 month long period which had me pretty emotional and tired before that. it was just ridiculous - but once i hit my third month on the pill my hormone levels balanced out and i haven't had a problem with being overly emotional since then. now i don't know how depo works, but it could either just be the introduction of the hormones into your bloodstream or it could be a side effect. give it a little more time and see what happens, and if it doesn't get better talk to your doctor : )

Thank you guys for your responses! I actually ended up going to the DR. (and crying through the entire visit ... about nothing) So he gave me some anti depressants. I've never taken any before but he only has me taking half a pill (5mg) at night and it seems to be helping so far. I'm only on day 3, yesterday I was feeling better, today is mediocre ... anyways I've decided I'm definitely not getting another shot, like lizardb63 said, I just don't think hormones are for me and will be looking into a IUD ! Now I guess I just have to ride out the next 2 months and hope the crazy and the bleeding start to go away!

Andrea, just remember... the Mirena IUD has hormones in it, but the Copper Paragard IUD does not. Just an FYI.
