Personally I think people should learn to do their own research better rather than needing hand holding. No doctor can know everything or remember everything they should say about each treatment. There isn't a single thing I've been prescribed no matter how minor or major that I didn't do research on before swallowing it, inserting it, whatever. Most of the time I go to the doctor with all the options already categorized by preference. If it's a doctor I know I might take their opinion but if it's not and their opinion doesn't match mine I go get a second opinion or do more research and come back. My mirena IUD didn't work out but I think I made the proper decision based on the information currently available for it and my knowledge of myself which was that hormonal birth control worked great and I have a high pain tolerance. Now knowing what I do I will never have any IUD of any type because my body rejects little objects being shoved in to it. Doesn't mean mirena doesn't work great for some people though. Those people just need to do their own research and decide if it's worth it for them. I'm actually currently annoyed at not being on hormonal birth control. Acne, dandruff, more painful periods, occasional yeast infections, and a growing lump on my cervix that is going to have to be checked out. All of that went away or for the last one didn't happen while I was on birth control. It has plenty of merits for some people and should always be stated as an option.

i just recently got the mireana removed and it didnt hurt at all and it only took a second. i got mine removed for health problems. but there has been alot of complaints about the mireana growing into the uterus and if its not properly takin care of theyve had to surgically remove it and its caused alot of people serious problems like never being able to have children again.
but good look and id like to know what happens with ur situation because i was actually considering getting another one put in after my problems are over.

I personally don't think that expecting your doctor to inform you of your options, risks, etc is called hand holding. We all know where the internet is concerned that you can find a thousand pros and a thousand cons for just about everything. Some if it's good info, some of it's bogus. While some of it may be good information, it's also helpful if the certified medical doctor who has your well being in his hands, cares enough to give you good information about what you're about to do to your body.

Agreed. However, in my 10 years of being on hormonal birth control, struggling and back and forth at the doctor, no one ever even discussed non hormonal options with me. Hormonal birth control is ALWAYS stated as an option by doctors. However, as many others on here could attest, non hormonal options are rarely discussed.

I agree with people being empowered. I'm one of those people that researches pretty much everything. But I also know I'm not a doctor, and there's a reason they made it through med school, became certified and now make big bucks every time I step in their office. It's their job to know the good and the bad about the treatments they prescribe.

I never believe on nurses and you should. Because doctors know how to do.

When I had Mirena inserted at my 6 week check up I thought I was making a smart decision. I was 18, newly married, and wanted to wait a long time before having another child. Unfortunately for me I have always been very forgetful, which led to my son. This is why I chose Mirena. I thought 5 years of birth control without having to remember to take a pill, insert a ring, or go get a shot would be great! I only wish the results had met my expectations.
I was 130 lbs when I got pregnant, 172 lbs when I had my Mirena put in place, and now I linger between 175-180 lbs even with daily exercise and eating healthy. NEVER in my life have I had problems losing weight until Mirena.
I have also suffered from daily back pain, acne, irritability, mood swings, depression, decreased sexual desire, lack of motivation to do anything, and my menstrual cycles had stopped completely early on.
Then as I hit my one year mark with Mirena things got even worse. Suddenly I began menstruating again, but it wasn't regular or spotting. The flow was so heavy, at times I felt like I was going to faint. Then the bleeding would stop for a couple days, and suddenly start up again for a day or two. There have even been days where I have been nauseous and vomiting. This has been going on for two weeks now. I know it's not pregnancy because I saw my doctor a couple days ago to get a test done, which came back negative. Sometime within the next few days I am going to get my Mirena removed. I would rather try my luck with another type of birth control and risk a pregnancy then suffer like this for four more years!
To anyone looking into Mirena as their birth control option, DON'T GET IT! I would not and will not recommend this to anyone. In fact, I don't understand why this is even available to women at all.

    Unhappy Issues with Mirana...

Ok, I had Mirana put in on Wednesday. It was pretty painful, but I expected it to be. I took motrin prior to the insertion, and have been on motrin since. Every 8 hours I take another dose. The pain started to go away yesterday morning, still a little crappy and I am spotting now.

However, since last night I have had the worst pain in my virgina. It's really swollen, which isn't something I thought would happen. The best way to describe it . . . its swollen like when you have rough sex or like after you have a baby...that week after you are pretty swollen. That's how I feel.

I called my doctors nurse and she thinks I am ok, but made me an appt for Monday. She said if it gets worse, then I need to go to the ER - well duh!

As anyone else had this issue after having Mirana inserted?

*sorry for the tmi - but really, the nurse made me feel like this is normal, but it doesn't feel normal*

    yikes
sounds like its not in properly or something
i had my first mirena put in 5 years ago in a drs office and it wasnt very enjoyable. but a few days later i was good as new no bleeding or anything just a bit crampy
on tuesday i had it replaced under a general anestetic bc they couldnt find the strings of my old one.
a little bloated and crampy and a little blood bc of the d and c to remove the old one... but no problems like you are talking about
not sure where you live but maybe go to a walk in clinic if you dont want to wait for the long lines in the er

well Ive had my mirena since march of 2009. I had bleeding probably for a good two weeks after inserted but ever since have had no bleeding at all. Have had cramps and lots of bloating ever since inserted but absolutly not bleeding. However today woke up with pretty bad cramps and now have been bleeding..is this normal? from what ive read its not normal to have no bleeding for so long then all the sudden start. I can still feel sthe strings so i know its still in place. I dont have a doctor right now have recently moved and am not sure if it is something i need to be concerned about....does anyone have any advise or have ever had the same things happen?
