Thread: Dryness, tearing, new brand

I started taking Sprintec birth control a year ago and everything seemed to be gong well. My periods became regular, cramps improved, and skin cleared up. About six months later I noticed things were getting a little... dry. I had barely any natural lubrication and the area seemed a lot less supple. It got worse until I was actually experiencing small vaginal tears from the friction of intercourse and discomfort using tampons. Even pelvic exams became painful and caused the same issue.

My doctor tested me for any infections or STDs (all negative, thankfully). Aftr a failed attempt with a topical steroid cream he prescribed an estrogen cream (Estrace) that I am to use for a month and note any improvements/changes. So far its been about three weeks and things seem to have gotten better but without any penetration since I won't know if the problem is resolved.

Regardless if it is or not, the fact that I need an estrogen supplement means my brith control is the cause of my problem. Since I can't use Estrace over the long term because of side effects and the risk of cancer (I have a family history) I wanted to find out if anyone had any advice, similar experiences, or recommendations as to any birth control varieties or brands that could improve this problem? Sprintec just doesn't seem to be cutting it. Thank you.

I think your doctor should consider switching you to a lower hormone does bc pill since you're family has the cancer history anyways. Lo loestrin24fe would be great to look into. The lower the dose, the lower the side-effects. Do some researching and ask your doctor next time you can.

Otherwise, if your problems with the dryness only seem to become an issue around intercourse, I'd recommend just using a really good lube. You could have a lot of fun with that too since a lot of lubes are designed to increase pleasure in general. I too have trouble getting wet enough during sex at times and know how much it can hurt. It takes the joy out of sex completely and when you're finished, you're left with a burning sensation I'd definitely ask about a lower dose.
