Heavy Bleeding on the Pill/Could it be Miscarriage?

Hello,

I've tried to talk to the doctor at the clinic where I've gone for women's health care, but she was really dismissive and didn't really help, so here I am. I'd appreciate any help.

I've been taking Seasonique (an extended birth control) for the past three months, and am now halfway through the "placebo" pills in the last week. I started spotting slightly on the second week of the third month, and then it progressed into breakthrough bleeding as if I were having a regular period. Yesterday afternoon, I experienced sudden and intense cramps. I ran to the bathroom to find out that I soaked through a tampon I had just put in, and that bright red and runny blood was dripping into the toilet (sorry to be so graphic). I was soaking through tampons, so I quickly grabbed some paper towels, and quickly soaked through those. It was like someone had cut a vein or something. There was some clotting as well.

The heavy bleeding subsided after an hour or so, but the cramps remain. I've never experienced periods this heavy before, and believe me, my periods are usually heavy and long.

So my question is, could this have been a miscarriage, or does it sound like a normal "pill period"? I've taken the pill every day, but I hardly ever took it at the same time. There would be anywhere from an hour difference to six. I've never skipped an entire day though. I know this slightly decreases the effectiveness, but even so, I've heard it's nearly impossible to get pregnant on the pill if taken every day. (Oh, and I'm not on any other medications.)

Like I've stated, I've tried asking the doctor, but she just went on and on about the definition of spotting, but this is most definitely not spotting.

Ooh. I'm not sure if there's any way to tell if it was a miscarriage or not at this point.

How long ago did this bleeding happened? If it happened within the last couple of days you could take a pregnancy test, as it would still show positive for some time even after a miscarriage.

I don't think it's LIKELY that that's what it was though... But again it is a little difficult to explain such sudden heavy bleeding.

See what happens the next few months. If this ever happens again, take a pregnancy test right away so you can know for sure. If it ever turned out positive then I would seriously consider switching to a different brand of birth control!

Thank you for responding. The bleeding happened about twelve hours ago. I'm going to take your advice and take a pregnancy test. I never knew that a postive could still show up afterwards.

Yep, that's because it takes a few days for the pregnancy hormone to drop back down. I'm really curious to see the result, I hope you post back soon!

I'm not sure what your age is, but my mother had this problem about 10 years ago and went to the ER for it. Turns out she had fibroids in her uterus. Maybe look into that? It runs in families.
