I had my coil fitted in February 2006 and I have had very painful periods and very heavy bleeding ever since, I was regular until recently where I was over 2 weeks late and the next month I was 6 days late. I'm thinking of having it removed.

I have had my IUD for a few days. It was painful to put in but I am sure better than child birth. My partner and I dont want kids and are sick of condoms so it was the best siduation for both of us. I was cramping and was sore for about three days but now I dont feel it or any pain. I have been reading on this website that the string has made discomfort to the male partners. I wanted to find out so we did it and he said he could feel it in there but it didnt bother him at all. Hes very hung so I knew if it were to hurt him it would have. I hope this helps. I am very satisfied with this product. I know one of the problems is possibly becoming steril (not sure if I spelled that right) That to me would be a blessing so I am not at all worried about that! I hope this helps!!!

    Default better than expected

After reading all of the posts on iuds.....I was very nervous going to get mine yesterday. I chose the copper iud because I did not want a hormonal birth control. Having the iud put in place was not bad at all....just a little cramping but nothing like I expected. I was glad that my husband came along to drive me home because I did feel slightly dizzy/off after the procedure. This is the second day and I feel great. I hope it continues!

    Hello all,
I have to agree with others, this has been a very useful thread.

I am 23 years old and have never been pregnant. I have never had any vaginal infections and have only ever had one sexual partner. We have been using condoms for far too long now, but I don't want to use hormones that alter my cycle and sex drive. I hear they dry you up and lower your libido, and both of those things sound terrible to me!

So I decided to get Paragard inserted and am going in next week. I did a lot of research, and although I know they are more highly recommended for women who have given birth, I feel that in all other respects I am an okay candidate (one sexual partner, no history of disease).

I knew all the downsides when I decided to get it, but now that the date is approaching, I am getting more and more fearful. Can some of you in a similar situation as me share your good stories of Paragard? Have any of you had trouble getting pregnant after having your Paragard removed? (I want to have children, just not yet!)

Thanks for any help and comfort you can give me!
    -Jess

I'm 22 and also have never been pregnant. I've been through 3 insertion attempts, none of which succeeded. However (!) though my cervix would not dilate and was on the offensive against the instruments they used, the pain was NOT THAT BAD. Here's what I recommend:

    1) Take at least 600mg of Ibuprofen 30-60 minutes before your appointment. I forgot to do this before my first insertion attempt and the pain was unbearable. Next attempts I took some beforehand and they were 1/100th as painful. I mostly just felt kind of uncomfortable.

    2) Drink lots of fluids during the day and make sure your blood sugar is up. Some women experience faintness/dizzyness when their cervix is touched/poked (I was one of those), so you want to make sure your body has the right resources to cope if it has to.

    3) Bring someone with you! Preferably your SO or someone who will be able to hold your hand, calm you, and help you relax. My boyfriend wound up doing breathing techniques with me during the process and it really, really helped. Plus, you may not be able to drive yourself home after the insertion process. I was too faint to drive even though they never got the IUD in me.

    4) Relax! Everything is going to be fine. The pain, if it occurs, will only last up to a minute, and it's not even that bad. It's just like a big menstrual cramp. IUDs (esp. Paragard) are safe and easy to remove and complications associated with them are REALLY rare! You'll be fine.

i just got Paragard placed this morning and it was uncomfortable (at worst) with only a few intense period like cramps during insertion.i have had 1 vaginal delivery so im not sure if that makes a difference. i should also mention that i've always had pretty severe cramps with my period, so if you are a lucky girl who doesnt cramp during their cycle, the cramping may shock you a bit. i feel the need to clarify that i did not feel anything touching or opening my cervix, the only pain was cramping in my stomach and back (this was my biggest fear/concern) All in all, i had my feet in the stirrups for around 10 minutes, half of that time they were actually working on me and the other half was prepping the iud and such. Overall it was not NEARLY as bad as i expected! i am only 4 hours in and am just having very mild cramps and Very light bleeding! so far so good! hope everything continues to go well!

I had the copper iud inserted almost three months ago. I wanted to get the mirena but my doctor said he has problems with them falling out so i decided to go with the copper iud. First off holy painful. I have had one child but i am very small and it hurt so bad. Afterward he said i would bleed some so put on a pad and the nurse will call you for an ultrasound to make sure it was in the correct place. I was bleeding so bad when the nurse pulled the thing out i gushed blood all down the chair. so embarrasing. Let me not forget i had it inserted the last day of my period, i ended up having my period all over again for almost 10 days and just 12 days later it was back and heavier then i have ever had. I have tried the pill( which i can never remember), the shot( that i gained 45 pounds in a year), and the nuvaring ( that flew out everytime i had sex with my husband) This one works for me but not without pain...Good luck girls

Any other ladies who can give their positive input would be appreciated. There are too many women out there hearing sooo many bad stories about IUDs. WE need positive experiences. I too recommend it.

I think that it is great that you keep updating your progress with the IUD!!! I agree that people should also put positive feedback on here!! I am 29 years old and have been debating whether or not to get the Paragard because of all the horror stories that you find on the internet!!! Anything with hormones is not an option for me.. too many side effects!! After reading your posts I am definitely going to get it done!! I already have 4 children and even if I do have longer heavier periods.. I am willing to deal with that.. I see that it has been a few months since you updated... is everything still going good??

one of the cons some people dont think about when trying it out, is financial.
i have insurance and I still got a bill over $400 from the dr. after ins. payed their part, plus the $25 co-pay to go to the dr.

And I got mine taken out, another $25 co-pay. So yea, $450 for 6m of BC wasnt too good.

But I do hope it goes good for you. I didnt have a good time AT all. But others have. And when it comes down to, if you can handle it it is great form of BC.
