Default copper iud?

I'm interested in trying an iud. Can anyone share their experiences about the insertion process, side effects, etc.? I think that hearing real accounts will be a big help with my final decision.

Thumbs up Use it

I have had an IUD for 2 years. The pros are that you don't worry or even think about it. I cramped and bled a little when inserted. Otherwise, I don't even think about it. The only con is a heavier cycle with the type of IUD that I have. I hear there is one with a low dose of hormone which lessen your cycles over time. I wish I would of gotten that one now. Overall I would highly recommend it. But like I said for me, I wish I would of gotten the one with the hormone. I hope this helped.

Default Iud

I have the IUD, it was pretty painful to have it installed, with the doctor having to measure your cervic with a metal poll, it feels like you are on your cycle when they install it. I will say before going to get it put in to take a pain killer, you can choose 2 different IUD, one is it is good for 10 years, and another one is 5 years, I would ask the doctor which one is right for you. I have the 10 year one.

Sorry for the delay.Had a little computer trouble . Thanks for the responses. After many late nights of reading I've decided to give it a try. My dr has ordered it and I should have in by next week. I'm a little scared but hoping for the best.

Lightbulb my experience

I had a Copper IUD placed 6 weeks after my second son was born (2002). They cut the string too short - so it wasn't visible - oops. It was painful being placed. It started the periods from you know where. I would go through super plus tampons in an hour the docs said it was from the copper. Well that did finally regulate to a managable flow. I started having pains out of the blue during sex that felt like a sharp poke near my right ovary area. I finally got over the embarassment (moved and new docs now army) and they couldn't find any logical reason, and did an Xray. It was determined to still be there, and they felt my uterus was "tipped". They ordered an ultrasound and found it was in the right position and no other problems, such as cysts etc. Those doctors (2 different ones) felt that it would need to be removed in an OR since the string was gone. That didn't sound pleasant and although I wanted it out - it was a 50/50 shot which was worse to keep it or get it out.

We had to move again and decided to inquiry again about what it would involve to remove. Primary had to do referral to ob/gyn, duh gotta love the army. I started ortho tricyclen a month before my consult so that it would be an overlap. I had been on ortho trycyclen for about 5 or 6 years before my first child with no problems so that is why I went on that one.

I went in for my consult and much to my surprise - they whipped out some very odd looking search tools and went fishing for the string - OMG I have never been nervous before but... next thing I knew it was out - and I never felt a thing. Removal was not the nightmare I had been dreading for 2 years! It was finally removed 4/2007 so I had it for about 7 weeks less than 5 years.

Overall I didn't have any infections, the pain only happened 3 times bad enough to take it out, but several others were uncomfortable. Hubby never felt a thing, but then again they lost my string. Periods were VERY heavy for a solid year or more and then still very heavy finally had reduced to a normal period after about 3-4 years. I would try it again, but probably go with Mirena over the copper one. The worst part for me was the fear of getting it removed after one stupid doc, did not give me all my options.

As for emotional and other related things I can't really judge. My oldest son was diagnosed with brain cancer when my youngest was 18 months old, and was going through treatment for that so my life was very stressful and busy during a lot of the time I was on it. Or Hubby was deployed etc. I also breast fed my youngest until 18 months old so that plays a part in emotional state too.

Unhappy My IUD experience

I had my IUD inserted about 7 weeks ago and so far I'm not really happy with it. I have 2 children and both of them were conceived while I was on birth control pills so I decided I would try the IUD. It's been 7 weeks and I just started my period for the third time. Before I got the IUD I rarely had cramps with my period and now they are awful. Last Saturday I had cramps so bad that I could hardly walk around, it literally felt like I was going into labor that's how bad they were and I wasn't even bleeding yet. Then Sunday and yesterday I bled a little bit and today I have been bleeding a lot. My periods have been lasting for over a week and they are so weird. One day it'll be super light and then a couple hours later it will be really heavy and then for a day or two it will seem like it's over but then I start bleeding like crazy again. I've also noticed that when I'm not on my period I get quite a bit of discharge that I normally don't get. I want to have it taken out but I'm too afraid to get back on pills because I don't want another child right now. I work for a health clinic and I spoke to one of the midwifes here and she said that it's not uncommon for that to happen the first couple of months but that if my cramps and bleeding don't get better by my next period (which with the way it's been going will be in about another week) to call my doctor. I'm sure that everyone's experience hasn't been this way and I'm praying that things will get better for me.

Unhappy Copper T experience

Just yesterday i went to the doctor to have the COPPER T inserted. It wasnt painful but just a little cramping when they tried to insert it. I dont have any kids, so they were having trouble getting my uterus to open up and insert the IUD. it wasnt so horrible but very uncomfortable... after 5mins trying, the doctor had to stop because my uterus just would not cooperate. my doctor had to give me a prescription of a medicine that i have to take the night before the IUD will get inserted to soften my uterus opening...
I will be going back again tomorrow to redo the insertion.... Until now though i am still cramping... its not a very painful cramping but an annoying cramping.. i think id be able to manage it tomorrow... i let you know how it goes.. i dnt think its that bad.. i just wish it worked out for me on the first time...
i cant wait to get off the BCP though...
