Unhappy I want my libido back!

I've been on the Depo shot for 5-1/2 years. Since then I've gained a lot of weight (around 75 lbs which I haven't been able to lose), completely lost my sex drive, and been diagnosed with Dysthymia (a chronic depression). I had chalked all of this up to being a new mom and working full time, etc. But since I've started researching switching to a different form of birth control, I'm realizing that I'm not alone, and this is probably all due to the Depo!

I love the fact that I haven't gotten my period in 6 years (!) not that I ever really had a heavy period or major cramps (I've got good genes in that department), but it's not worth all the other problems. My new GYN has suggested I get a Mirena IUD, but I've read so many varying opinions of women who are on it, and I know it's the same hormone as the Depo. I was happily on Ortho Tri-Cyclen for about 10 years before I stopped to start a family. As annoying as having to remember to take the pill is everyday, at least I know I didn't have the same problems as I do now!

My poor husband has really been suffering as well, having to put up with my moods and complete lack of interest in sex for the past 5 years. This has caused a rift in our marriage - I just want to be back to normal! Has anyone been through something similar or have any advice?

I haven't had a horrible experience like that but I think you should definitely switch birth controls. I've read such horrible things about Depo. You're story is similar to so many other women's. I've read almost all good things about the Mirena, so that sounds like a good option.

I was only Ortho Tricyclen for a couple years too and loved it. I'm in a different country now and they don't have that, so I'm on a low hormone pill. It's been alright. I've been on it for 10 months. Except, I didn't get to the doctor in time this month to get a new prescription, so this month I'm off it. And in just the week I've been off it my libido has skyrocketed! It's making me seriously consider staying off it, but I don't think my boyfriend would go for that.
Well some people say that you shouldn't tempt fate, and for them I can not disagree. But I never learned nothing from playing it safe; I say fate should not tempt me. I take my chances.

DO NOT get the Mirena if you are having these reactions to the depo ! They are both progesterone only and you have a very high chance of having the same side effects !! The Implanon are implant has only progesterone. You sound like you may need a birth control that is a combo of progesterone and estrogen. The pill you mentioned is, as well as the NuvaRing and the patch. If you want to try and IUD, think of going hormone free with the Paraguard but that also has its problems for some people.
