Time for some fun.
In one of my fav books, #2 on my must read list, Kiss My Tiara by Susan Jan Gilman, has a chapter on movies and how stereotyped women are. She notes very humorously, that women are typically pretty insipid and one dimentional in the media. She also notes that for every "chick flick" there are several "testicle fests" or "d-flicks", none of which does either gender much credit. Her solution is that we should come up with something to counter this - the creation of new "archtypal myths". No more "damsels in distress, hookers with hearts of gold, or policewomen in love with psychopaths", we should come up with some new movies or remakes of old ones to fit a new image.
So here's the challenge; Movies you want to see or remakes of current hits with woman power in place. Here's a couple examples gleaned from Kiss My Tiara:
The Little Merman; a buff young "merman" from Sea World falls in love with Sage the fearless female captain of a Greenpeace ship. He makes a deal with an underworld socerer to trade his voice for a great pair of legs and buns. She falls for him because he's the only guy she's ever met who actually listens. They sail off into the sunset, she's steering.
Saving Ryan's Privates; a non sappy film about the 500,000 American women who served as WACs and nurses in WWII.
Hot Flashes: two menopausal women realising that our culture pretty much treats them as invisible, decide to become spies. They become brilliant counterintelligence agents disguised as Mary Kay saleswomen.
What would you like to see?
