Default Diary of a Wimpy Kid series?

Ah, 'Tis the season... so my great-neice is a 6th grader. She's got every toy you could imagine, tons of jewelry and earrings, electronics, etc, etc...

I want to get her something nice for Christmas that isn't some piece of junk. I've heard the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books are a fantastic read for tween boys and girls, even those who aren't big readers. Does anyone have any children in their lives who have read the books? What did they think? Are they as good as the reviews say?

Furthermore, do you think a girl, who admittedly thinks 'books/reading are borrrrrring' actually get into such a series? She's a smart girl, but is getting that attitude where being smart is dumb and being ditzy is cool. I don't want to get her more nail polish or cellphone bling to encourage this phase (frankly, it makes me grit my teeth). I want to give her something of substance, but I don't want to waste my money on a gift she won't like either.

    Any advice?

My 10 year old LOVES the series. A lot of his friends really like the series too.

I've even bought the series for my 5 year old (he's proven to be an early reader) and granted it is just words on paper to him at this point, but my 10 year old will read with him and to him and he loves it too. I've read bits and pieces when reading to my 5 year old and they are cute.

My neighbor across the street, her daughter does a lot of reading and I know she's read these series and loved them... Sisters Grimm Series, Allie Finkles Rules for Girls Series, Artemis Fowl.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks Lana, that does help! I've been asking around too and I've heard the same rave reviews so I went ahead and bought the series for her today! Hopefully she will like them

I know this is after-the-fact, but maybe you will need another gift idea for her some day. Another book series loved by young girls is the Dork Diaries series. You might want to consider that too.
