Too many of us have 'childhood issues' of some kind which affect our adult lives in ways we cannot always understand. Most anti-social/dysfunctional behaviour is caused by something that has happened to us during childhood and all too often we grow up unaware that we haven't really grown in the true sense, rather we become 'stuck' at the age we were when whatever it was took place.

Abuse, un-loved, many children suffer I agree. Abusers don't always turn out to be abusers pending I think on what else that they had in their life growing up. If they were constantly abused say by a male, their Father, then their Mother took over, they wouldn't necessarily see that their Mother is an Abuser, because all that they really recall, deep down inside somewhere is the hatred of a "man", so the "woman" is okay, yet she's not at all.
Un-loved, can send children into a little shell, hard to come out of, they become introverted, study everything, stay in-doors. They can also seek love and attention, and get themselves into trouble, whilst they are constantly searching for love... Even Murdered through naievity all for the sake of looking for love.
I used to read Ann Rule books. I haven't read the one you are referring to but it does sound interesting, as Psychology is also something that I have studied and love.
Her books, some, were pure Evil. My interest was trying to ascertain WHY? Why the person did what they did? One book was so disgusting however, i did read it until the end, but it has stayed in the back of my mind for life.... He was a gardener and lured the 10 year old girl... 5 years later, he wrote to the parents, anonymously excepting they still had his handwriting from before... He claimed and was found out to be correct, that he roasted the little girls body parts, and ate them... Pure Evil. In viewing his background he was abused sexually by a male, his father, as well as physical abuse of torture...
I think some people will say it's in their genes. I tend to think people snap, they are weak, prayed upon over and over and then snap...
