Like many, my family has a long history the in battle against cancer especially genetic breast cancer. Both my mother and her sister were diagnosed at a young age and passed away at age 38. I was only six at the time of my mother's death.
Upon the request of a Toronto Geneticist in 1994, I had my first mammogram and ultrasounds. I was 26; and received my second at age of 28, I have continued every year after. I have a breasts history consisting of many cysts (fibrous) and one lump (odd shape), which has been monitored for over 10 years now? A mammogram is a very intimate procedure. To help ease the stress and fears associated with mammograms, I have written a creative piece that I would like to share with you. I hope this post is allowed here if not I am truly sorry Moderators.. I Am Well, hello there. Please come in and let me tell you a little bit about myself. As you may notice my environment is a little on the cool side. This is to help the team, including myself to maintain optimal performance since there are high expectations for accuracy in my profession. Although the lighting is a little dim, it is somewhat soothing. With the hint of sanitizer in the air, I feel clean. Enough about the room lets move on to me. I am known as the Don Juan of my building. For you see, ninety-nine percent of my clients are women from all ages, sizes, creeds and nations. Ah, you may ask if I have a preference but alas NO! They each have their own beauty and I am fortunate to know them personally. After a short interview with my assistant, these lovely ladies are introduced to me in an intimate way as our bodies become entwined in several unique positions. Although they find my body cold and sterile against their nakedness, they grasp onto my arm with one hand and wrap themselves around me, waiting for my embrace. My assistant guides them into proper position, as a part of me is lowered onto their exposed delicate area. We are left alone for a few minutes in our pose. Since I don’t know my own strength, rumors have arisen that some women’s knees buckle from the force of my embrace but alas that is all it is. Although a handful may find my pressure as excruciating as torture, for most it’s just a minor discomfort. Regrettably, I do leave them feeling a little tender. They call me Don Juan because the women who come to feel my embrace all have a common reason--LOVE; Love for themselves, love for their spouses, love for their children, family and friends. In return, I give them HOPE; Hope for a new beginning; hope for more precious time, hope to break their fears. I am Don Juan. I am your Mammogram Machine. Created By Sherri-Anne Wills
