Oh, and also, what does it mean that it can start to twist my ovary? Will I know if it does? Can I stop it from doing that some how?
Hi! I'm not too sure how this is supposed to go, just got started on here, but here it goes. After a couple days in the ER, and after being told multiple times I had appendicitis and my ovaries were fine, an ultra sound showed me yesterday that I have a big cyst that made itself right at home on my ovary. It's about the size of a tennis ball, so it's no wonder I'm in pain. When I got the ultrasound, the technician said that I had an ovarian cyst in the past (which no one ever told me about) so this is my second ovarian cyst that I know about and I'm only 18. The ER doctors told me next to nothing and wouldn't give me a note for time off work to stop the pain, so when I went to my family doctor for a note, she mentioned that it's really strange that someone who has been on birth control pills for 3 years now is getting cysts on her ovary. Now if that doesn't mess me up enough, my grandmother died of ovarian cancer 11 years ago, and ovarian cancer gets passed of pretty easily from what I hear.
Can anyone tell me if they've had this experience or know what's going on?? It's a whole lot of information for me to soak in since yesterday! Are the cysts only going to get worse/lead to cancer? I'm going back for a second ultrasound in 6 weeks and a gynecologist sometime before then, but I've never been because my family doctor has always done everything, and I don't know what to expect at all. Can someone put my mind at ease here?![]()

From what I can gather, Ovarian Cysts can break down by themselves, I imagine they leave a scar of some sort and this is why you were advised that you had had one before.
Your Doctor's query over why you are getting them when you are on the pill, is that the pill should be making a normal cycle for your body and therefore decreases any development but this hasn't occured for you..
It is common... and they can be removed by surgery, but they are not the same as Ovarian Tumors ( Cancer), that is Polycystic Ovary Disease..
So ask when you go back if there is a chance that you can also get this disease, they have not stated that you have that at all... So try not to stress, rather be in understanding how that occurs.
Basically, during ovulation the pill is not breaking down the eggg, follicte fails to break them down and this is why you are getting cysts.
Is the pill strong enough for you? Ask your Doctor of that as well.
Complications have to do with the condition causing the cyst and this is probably what they will ascertain when they do the surgery, this is where twist comes from, as perhaps a reason.
Let them ascertain the reason and remove this one and then work towards a treatment to stop any more from occuring.
And ask lots of questions so you don't feel so frightened that was a lot to obsorb in 1 day for you.
Good luck.

Thank you for your help!! There's just so much I want to know, and it's so hard to see a doctor around here. The wait for an appointment is almost 2 months at my family doctor, and I just luckily got squeezed in so I didn't have much time at all to ask anything. Before yesterday, I hadn't even heard of ovarian cysts, let alone thought I would ever get one!
Is there anything I can do for it in the meantime? I've been just barely handling the sharp pains, with 3 ibuprofens every 4 hours. It doesn't give me much relief at all... just wondering if there were little things I could do that might help?
Well that is a lot to take in all at once. Since you do know it runs in your family this is something you should monitor closly. The gynocologist will be much better equiped to answer all your concerns. Make a list of questions you have to cover with them so you get the answers you need.
Make sure you let them know your family history.
What about wheat bags? You microwave them for 3 minutes and place it on your stomach, (heat), often helps..
I am agast that your Doctor didn't prescribe you with something to help.
Also go to the chemist and ask if they can give you muscle relaxants, or something stronger for the pain that does not require a prescription.
Sorry you have to wait so long...

Thank you both very much for your advice!!
I just got a phone call that I can't get in to see a gynecologist until August 6th!I have no idea what they expect me to do until then, it's been bleeding for nearly a week now (almost like a second period... not fair!). I hope that's something that normally happens.
I don't know if you have been to see a consultant yet but you mentioned that Ovarian Cancer is in your family.
My sister in law had ovarian cancer and one of the biggest problems was in the diagnosis. I read an article the other day about a new test that is coming that can detect the early stages of ovarian cancer and as like you it is in the family I read it with interest because I have a daughter and I worry that she could be carrying the gene. The article didn't give a lot of details about it but it looks like it is very good. The article said that the test was called Ovplex so might be something worth looking at.
Hope everything is good with you though. Being so young and dealing with this sort of worry isn't easy.
