I recently had a LEEP procedure for severe dysplasia and I've read some studies suggesting that the estrogen in birth control can promote abnormal cell growth. Does anyone know/heard about this? I am wondering if it is worth using alternate birth control methods to limit my chances of a reinsurance.

In your case I would definitely consider a non-hormonal method, as I too have heard of increased risk of cancer with prolonged use of hormonal birth control methods.

Have you gotten any doctors' opinions on this?

My doctor is kind of a skeptic. He says I am already on a low-estrogen birth control pill so he does not think it would make a difference. But, even if there is the slightest chance that the pill could promote abnormal cell growth, isn't it better to stop? I don't know...I feel like it may be better to be on the safe side.

agree w/ msT... hormonal bc is easy, cheap, convenient and can help regulate periods.. it is also, well, hormonal. Hormones very powerful stuff an not to be taken lightly. sometime side effects of weight gain, others...

Still, chance of unwanted pregnancy is itself a serious health risk, so ya ballence risk/bennfit and choose self.

lots of safe, easy, effective non-hormonal options: i.u.d., cerv cap, diaphram check into them, try out some. Im very pleased w/ cap, bt have used diaph w/ good result too

I don't know... If you ultimately want to be as safe as possible, I think there'd be no reason NOT to switch to a non-hormonal method. It might save you a lot of side effects, on top of the abnormal cell growth thing which may or may not happen... And a non-hormonal method would be cheaper, to boot!

I'd look into the methods p3375 suggested. I myself have a non-hormonal IUD and am happy with it, but if I ever switch to another method, I'll definitely give the cervical cap a go.
