First of all I hope I am posting this in the right section. I am new to this message board and I'm finding it a bit difficult to navigate because of it's size.
Friday my doctor called to tell me that my pap came back positive for high risk HPV.
I have to go to a specialist for a colposcopy. I'm very scared and wondering how invasive this procedure is. I hate going in for regular paps and I'm nervous about this to say the least.
Also, I got a copper IUD fitted two years ago and I'm wondering if that could have anything to do with the abnormal pap.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The procedure is not at all invasive and it is very effective in getting rid of the cells that are infected with the virus. You should keep up with your PAP smears, don't avoid out of fear, if there is ever any abnormal test result, treating it promptly is the best way to go. I am so happy you found out about the infection before any damage was done.
For prevention - have any new partner checked for STD's before sex. Condoms don't necessarily prevent the transmutation of viruses because any contact with skin can cause transmission. Don't allow any man to give you oral sex without having him tested, you can also use saran wrap as a barrier if you don't know his status, always have your partners wear a condom, don't give a man a bj without a condom, the same viruses that cause cervical cancer cause oral cancer and you can get STDs from oral sex. **removed outbound link**
Glad you are having the procedure done.
