Depends on what country you are in.
If you are in the US or Europe, then it depends on the situation. It could be a problem in an office situation if the woman is higher in the organization than you. In in a normal social setting it is fine.
If a guy from a lower social status asked me out...so what. I'd be flattered.
If a guy from a lower social status asked me, that would be my pleasure.
Not all guys from a high social status are good. Some are pretentious.
