Thanks for all the ideas guys. I like your idea Denny. I was thinking of how to get him to write something w/o it being boring. I was also thinking about maybe having him write a story or an idea for a video game (like a story line, plot etc) because he LOVES video games. Lana Bear, I will definitely look into those books. JNS- Maybe in a few years that would be an option. That would be a cool experience for us! Thanks alot guys!

First off, forget any thoughts of him remembering anything from 8th grade. Ain't going to happen. Trust me in 9th grade the first month and a half is reteaching 8th grade. Teachers aren't dumb. They know they need to have everyone on the same page before they can start teaching anything new.

I would tell him that he is going to mix both pure fun things in with a few historical things he can take back for school next year. Mix an Astros game in with a history trail walk. Water Park with cultural event.

You'll go broke doing just fun things.
There will always be boundries, but making love is so different, than having sex, let's face it. CW

If you want him to do well in school, take away the video games and focus your activities on being outside. Pretzels suggestions are perfect.

Knowing kids that age, either he's a reader or he's not- and if he is, he'll surely choose his own literature. Not to discount the value of reading, but a boy his age is going to need something to Do to keep him occupied. Look up your community calendar and search for pottery, painting, even metal workshops- just look through it with him and he'll let you know what he'd like to do. With a project of some sort he'll be occupied enough to stay out of trouble and still have a good time- plus there's always the fruit of his labors, which could turn out to be more than just souvenirs; perhaps lifetime hobbies!

In case anyone is interested here is an update. My lil bro came for the summer. Played video games all day and was on the internet and we did alot of fun things, but he also sat down with me at least 2 times per week and we went over math. We had him and my boyfriends neice both write us an original story and they were competing so that made it fun for them. Of course they both got prizes (there were 2 of equal value and the winner got first pick). He has now started 9th grade and has actually thanked me and my bf for going over the math with him! We had a good summer, but I am definitely glad to be a single, childless woman again...lol
