Shape-shifting bra made of NASA space foam is the latest thing in 'biocosmeceuticals'

'Smart' bra created using NASA foam
    Changes shape as temperature rises
    More: Technology news and reviews
IT was originally designed by NASA to make safer aircraft cushions. Now it's being used to cushion something else.

NASA developed its intelligent memory foam in the '60s to make its aircraft seating safer and more comfortable.

It's still experimenting with the stuff, looking at potential uses in spacecraft parts and structural engineering products for the future.

But, for today at least, it's being used to make bras.

The "smart" foam, which has the unique quality of retaining or remembering its shape after pressure is applied, is the key ingredient in a new kind of bra being distributed in Australia.

Dr Tim Nielsen, managing director of the bra's local distributor, says he's always on the look out for interesting mash-ups of tech and clothing.

And space-foam bras, he says, take the cake.

"I've probably evaluated a couple of hundred products over the last three years, and once you filter all the ones out that are complete nonsense, this is number one," he told news.com.au

"I had to do a double take, and think 'how could that be possible?' But then when I read more about it, I realised more of the practical benefits.

"A derivation of the foam is used in the memory foam mattresses. It's also used in the safety lining of racing car helmets, and so I realised it could have a lot of practical uses, and this softening and expansion could have a lot of benefits."

Hang on. Softening and expanding? What exactly does this bra actually do?

"It can boost the cleavage when it detects a rise in body temperature," Dr Nielsen said.

"Such as when a woman gets a little flushed when she gets excited. It can kind of do some of the flirting for you."

    Really?

"But it also has a lot of practical benefits."

    Phew.

"For example, if you're exercising and it detects a rise in body temperature, it can expand to offer more support when you need it."

The bra, according to Dr Nielsen, can also adapt to a woman's changing shape and size, meaning you're less likely to have to shop for another bra down the line.

Dr Nielsen, who holds a PhD in biochemistry and has used it to pursue his business in what he calls "biocosmeceuticals", says the product may also make life easier for women dealing with ill-fitting bras.

"This smart memory bra, with the ability to solve all those problems, is the answer to a lot of people's dreams," he said.

    Indeed.

Only a MAN could ever have thought of this! lol.....What do you think girls?

If anything, it sounds like the exact opposite of what this guy is claiming. IF it is based on the Viscoelastic foam or "memory foam" like the foam used in the Tempur- brand mattresses (I have one and like it), then as your body temperature rises you actually sink further into the mattress so I don't see how this will increase clevage or whatever. If anything, it seems like the breasts would "settle" into the foam or sink thus reducing clevage....Oh well what do I know.....

Imagine ladies, encassing your breasts in a nice layer of foam....mmm! Now doesn't that sound cool and comfortable?

Maybe TEX should come out with his own version of this foam product....he could call it "Mammory Foam". What do you think Tex?

I wonder if a rescue has ever been done for the beds. I can see the victim's SO talking to the rescuers now: "Well, things were getting hot and heavy and she kept on sinking further into the bed." "Finally, I could no longer see her and I wasn't getting any pleasure any more, so I decided to get up and call for help." "You guys do have some sort of extraction tool, don't you?"

The viscoelastic portion is only so thick/deep JNS, so thankfully, I don't think this could happen. The core material is also foam but not the same type and is much more firm.

Thought I had absolutely lost my mind when I considered the cost of one of those mattresses...not anymore.

Interesting, and amusing... comfort for our girls (aka...boobs)!

Would like to see the results of this within a shoe.. If it would aid people with sore feet, back pain, painful joints, etc...... ?

So a boost in cleavage will do flirting FOR you? Bleah. I'm all for a bra that is sexy, comfy and multi purposeful... I am annoyed a bra that 'flirts' for me ... that is the stupidest thing I've read. lol. And insulting... as it implies that bigger boobs = flirting.

Must be on the theory that there are birds who puff themselves up during courtship -- but wait those are the males. Hummmm, do we see a future for padded male undergarments that give "boost" when the temperature rises. This could get interesting.

Boosted, 'flirty' boobs meet boosted 'flirty' penis and then where do we go?

    I'd buy a Tempur-NASA Bra
