Default Age appropriate...

I need to buy a dress for my daughters summer wedding and I want an age appropriate dress. At the knees, probably black. Not a matronly looking dress like I've been seeing, but not too young either. Something not tight around the hips as they seem to be bigger nowadays, wider looking than my shoulders, a little.
I'm 48 about to turn 49.

Help...can you post pictures on what would look good for a woman my age?
5'10", 150 lbs.

Help!!

A friend of mine's stepdaughter is getting married and we were looking at the "mother's" dresses at David's Bridal online. They come with jackets, but underneath, most of them are really cute. There are all different kinds.
Oh, and her stepdaughter said that mothers wearing black to the wedding means that they don't approve! So ask your daughter before you do it. If it doesn't matter to her, it doesn't matter.

My daughters wedding dress may be black or red, she isn't sure right now. She showed me a red wedding dress that I loved. So traditional isn't the norm here. I want to coordinate with the colors so that's why I'm thinking black...but I will consult with my daughter beforehand.

I saw some of the dresses you mentioned, but to me, they look matronly. I don't want to wear anything too young, nor too old.
I'm hoping for pictures because I want the style, to be age appropriate.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Get it made custom. A black silk cowl neck (which is very sexy despite how it may sound) spaghetti strap with a keyhole in the back. If you say this to a tailor they should be able to sketch it and show you what it looks like.

How about this one?
I saw this on brides.com and it looked nice. Though it comes with a bolero, you can remove it once you get to the reception.

Or you can make a sleeveless dress and top with with a sheer shawl or poncho. I just couldn't find a picture for it.

Oops, made a booboo on the link... sorry...

Anyways, just go to brides(dot)com and check out the dresses for mothers of the bride. You can filter the results, depending on the length of the skirt or color.

Default I can help

Sooo, after reading your post, I figured I can help. I took a lot of fashion courses. And I do a lot of sewing.
So if you can explain your body to me a bit better...like for instance, what part of your body do you like, do you NOT like...

I would go with a V neck, because it is classic, and classy...as long as the plunge is not too deep. Try not to get too slinky of a meterial, I would go for something that is crisp, but not stiff. A beautiful sheen cotton would be nice. Then you could have accents put in, like a beautiful silk trim. If you do want silk, make sure that the material will not twist. You have to be careful, because if the grain of the fabric is not sewn right, your dress will not fit right.

But try a V-neck. I would not go for Halter. But you can get a dress that makes you feel sexy, without showing a lot of skin. Try looking at different dress designs, and choosing what you like from them. Then go to a tailor, and have a dress made. That way, you can choose the material, color...and its made to fit.
