I just bought a heart rate monitor myself and it really has helped me too. I like knowing how many calories I have burned because I tend to underestimate myself as well.
I started P90X this week and one thing that is keeping me going (despite my sometimes comical attempts to keep up with the videos) is my heart rate monitor. There was at least one day in which I thought I did horribly until I looked at my calorie burn and it was more than any other day so far.
Anyway, just thought I'd mention that a HRM can be invaluable if you're struggling with a new routine.

I recently bought a fluidity package and just waiting for it to arrive. I believe in the ad, but it would be better to try. I want to get back in shape, since my bf and I got back together, both of us have been gaining little by little (normal thing!), but I'd rather get back that dancer form.
I try to go to the gym 3 or more times a week. When I can't go there, I try to do some routines at home.
Gym: I love the elyptical (sp?). I sweat and work a lot harder on that then the treadmill. Set it to fat burn for 20 to 30 minutes and I'm good. Other days I use some of the weight machines, concentrating on my butt and thighs (that's where all my weight is).
Home: Stair stepping and exercises on a mat on the floor that work the same areas.
Food: Don't drink sugary drinks or diet drinks. Replaced vegetable oil with olive oil. Less carbs and more protien and veggies. I'm still bad though. I eat chocolate, ice cream, cookies, and things like that too much and find myself having to work out even harder. It's hard to say no! LOL!
Have you ever read about drinking chocolate milk after a good workout? I'm using it as a recovery drink for my P90X workouts. Yum!
... google "chocolate milk recovery" for more info.
Well it depends on what you're going for. Some people aim to stay in their target range for one reason or another and it will have a default based on your height, weight, and age. Others will edit it if they prefer to work out harder or burn more calories per workout. Slow beep means they need to kick it up a notch and a quick beep means they can slow down a bit.
I started to use it just to track my calorie burn and be sure I'm eating enough. Before P90X, I was burning about 230-250 calories per workout and jumped to 400 to 500+ once I started. So that told me that I was doing well on the days I didn't think I did enough.
These days it's getting harder to maintain previous calorie burns because my resting heart rate is slowing down (yay!). So now I have cerain goals of how many calories I want to try to burn at any given workout by pushing harder or whatnot.
It's a neat tool to play around with. I'm sure others have different experiences with their own in how they ended up using it.
