Question Heart Rate Monitors

Can anyone explain to me how they work as i recently purchased one and after my first run on the tread mill my heart rate went up to around 180 beats per minute which is my maximum rate and i was only running very slow. I am only 30 years old and i exercise nearly everyday so i consider myself to be pretty fit. My fat burning heart rate is suppose to be around 124 beats a minute which would be walking pace. I thought running was suppose to lose more weight but i heard if your heart rate goes to high it has no effect on your training. Can someone please explain about what heart rate i should be at to lose weight as i'm confused
