Hi! I am new to the forum and also to fitness. I have chosen dancing for my cardio routine. I have been doing this for 5 weeks. I started doing only 5 minutes and have gradually moved up to 30 minutes, but the pain in my calves and ankles is still bad and starts after the first 5-10 minutes.
I am 5ft 1 and weigh 167lbs. I am also very out of shape (for many years). Is the pain due to my excess weight and will it go away anytime soon? I do cardio at least 5 times a week.

Some self massage may help too.

The pain will lessen when you start losing weight. You're just carrying too much for your small frame. Good for you for exercising and trying to get fit and healthy.

Make sure to massage your legs before and after you workout. After your workout lay on your back with your leg at 90°, write the alphabet with each foot. Make sure you are maximizing the movement with each foot. Turn your foot as far as you can with each letter, while holding your leg in place. It should stretch and burn by the end.

I agree with all posters. Do you lift weights as well? join a group that does circuit training if you are capable to do it. It should help me shed more weight and tone your muscles.

Keep a journal of whatever you eat and count their calories. Then consult a nutritionist to help you adjust your food intake.

I was also told by my new trainer that too much cardio (for so long) could actually ruin everything for you. You might even lose some muscles and not shed fat at all. That being said, weight lifting and working out should be done accordingly, based on your fitness level (more advisable if you use your own body weight, not machines so you can use more muscles).

Your dancing is a good start. Way to go!

Thanks guys I will definetly try these new things. The Stretching, massaging and the alphabet stretches.

I do some strength training with the stretch band as well every other day for now.

I would try maybe some stretching before and after exercise, and in general whenever ya got a free second. Also maybe add some light yoga to your routine. I will further help to stretch out muscles that have not been worked in a long time.
    Good luck to you

    Hi Lindluz,
    Is it Pain or Soreness?
Pain is your bodies way of telling you something is not right. Stop. Is your pain due to over used muscles or is it deeper? Have you had a physical to rule out joint problems or arthritis?? The ankle pain could be over use and too much weight bearing on the joint. I would really feel terrible if your ankle joint was in danger of erroison.
Possibly the dance for cardio is a bit too rigerous for you at this begining stage of fitness. Is there a way you could walk 30 minutes for cardio to alieviate joint issues? Swimming is even better. You want low to no impact.

Soreness from over used muscles is the result of lactic acid build up. After your work out (not before) stretch your calf muscle by standing 6" from a wall, step slightly forward with the one foot you will stretch, placing your heel on the floor and the ball of your foot on the wall. As if your going to very easily step on the the point where the wall and floor meet. Your foot should be at a 45º angle. Very Slowly lean forward to the wall to give your calf a mild stretch. Hold for 15 seconds and do the other foot.
To alieviate the lactic acid sit in a very warm bath for 5 minutes. Then run cool water from the shower on the muscle that is sore for 5 minutes. Repeat several times always ending with warm water. This helps rid the amount of acid in the muscles by creating circulation of blood flow.

You're body is still trying to adjust with the activity. Try to stretch before your activity so that your body won't hurt too much but if you continue your exercise you would definitely lose the pain.
