You don't have to go on a 'diet' to lose weight... you just have to start consuming less calories. Diet crazes that offer the opportunity to drop pounds fast and easy tend to lead to you gaining it back quickly as no one can live on those types of things forever.
You have take a look at what you are eating. Ask your doctor about how many calories a day you should be eating for your current size if you wanted to lose weight. If he tells you for example 1500 -- and you are eating a big mac and fries for lunch... you've already eating that amount of calories... anything else you are eating that day before and after that would be causing you to gain weight.
Exercise tends to only burn 100 to 300ish calories depending on what you are doing, how long and how hard you are doing it. If your body needs 1500 calories a day and you are giving it 3 to 4000 calories... even if you burn 200 of that doing exercise.. you are still taking in more than your body needs, a lot more. And thus gaining weight or not losing it.
Write down everything you typically eat in a day and the portions... you can do it here if you like and we can help you determain what might be causing your problem. There are also lots of calorie counting websites that can give you an idea of how much you're eating.
Quick tips that don't involved a diet that will lead to weightloss are:
ALWAYS eat breakfast, the sooner the better to when you wake up. (It boosts your metabloism for the day so that you are burning calories more effeciantly)
Drink LOTS of water throughout the day (it will help keep you full, keep your hand to mouth action busy and faciliate fat loss)
Don't eat within 2 hours of going to bed (your metabolism comes to a hault when you go to sleep... if you eat before bed you are just storing it as fat)
Do a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio vascular activity per day. Depending on your fitness level you can break it up in starting out with 3 - 10 minute walks and move up from there (check with your doctor on what is safe for your body)
Read boxes and labels and stick to giving yourself the serving size. Skip seconds. Load up your plates with veggies to help you get full on less food.
Scars remind us of where we've been...they don't have to dictate where we're going.
