I love sports that are quite active and can involve some contact and impact, my favourites have been soccer and bmx racing. Now, though, I have to look for something with no contact and less impact risks because I've been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I'm looking for inspiration for some new fun sports to try and I'd love if everyone could share their favourite sports. Thanks.

I love soccer too, and I actually play quite a lot of basketball. I really love doing that.

But that's not really low-impact of course...

In addition to that I do strength training (and some cardio). There's actually research indicating that resistance training (even explosive) helps prevent osteoporosis (although there are many possible causes of that of course).

Anyway, that probably didn't help you much...

I was going to say boxing in response to the thread title, but after reading...maybe not. haha
I box and play hockey. But those may not be best for you.
I also do competitive trail running in the summer. That's fun.

What about a martial arts class? A lot of those have very little contact but are still pretty active.

Thanks ambpure and sourpuss. I know there's probably heaps of sports others love to do that I won't - its still good to hear them - somehow hearing from other people who love their sports has a good effect on me. Even though your favourites mightn't be right for me - some of the others might be.

Sourpuss what is trail running? I've never heard of it before but sounds like maybe running on hiking trails? You've got me interested... Hadn't thought of martial arts because I thought they all had a lot of contact - that's something to look into - think there are some classes around my area.

Ambpure - you're right on the money about resistance training helping prevent osteoporosis. In all the publications they actually seem to call it "weight bearing" but I think its the same thing. It helps to treat the condition too - whilst medication can help slow the speed of bone tissue break down and supplements can help replenish bone, weight bearing exercise helps with the density side of things. That's what I understand so far - I'm still learning of course.

Oh yeah - I am looking to start doing weights workouts regularly - I figure its something I MUST do now... but to keep myself interested and focused I still want to find another sport. I'm actually starting to see a lot of options now - I could also do kayaking, surfing, squash, rock climbing... so I'm sure I'll find something that's a good fit...
