Over the last few years my fiance and I have built up a formidable collection of home gym equipment including a nice weight bench with good weights and a heavy barbell set, a collection of smaller hand-held barbells, a pull-up bar, a yoga mat, WiiFit, a small collection of cheap fitness videos (tai chi, yoga) and some great mountain bikes.

We both hate public gyms and we know what we should be doing and how to use our equipment at home, but we can't get motivated! He works nights now and I work days so we're rarely awake together except right before I leave for work (too late in the morning for me to work out), and right before he leaves for work/after I get home (too late in the evening for him to work out). I'm home for an hour or two mid-afternoon but work mornings/evenings. Because neither of us likes to go it alone, we've been avoiding exercise. Sometimes one of us will get on a routine for a few days, but it doesn't last. I've even tried setting goals, writing out a daily workout and taping it to the wall where I see it every morning!

So here's my question: What motivates you, and how do you think we can get motivated and back into a regular fitness routine? We both want to be more in shape and we have already changed to a healthier diet.

I am motivated by my sister, she was 112 ksg when she ws just 17 years but she lost 45 kg in a year and shaped her very nicely and still trying to loose. So after watching her weight loose I also joined the gym and start shaping my self.

I had dumbbells and a barbell in I kept in my living room when I was at home. During tv shows I just got up and did a few sets of different lifts every once in a while. You don't notice that you're really working out very much. I would do different types of ab work outs as well all while watching tv and then sitting back on the couch when I was tired. I got jacked this way. I actually really liked the feeling of the burn that I still had when I sat back down. Just make it a normal thing some how in your day

Too bad you don't enjoy going to the gym. I often work out at home, but getting to the gym, setting the time asside and being in a location where my focus is on working out and distractions are limited helps me get into the right mindset. Also, seeing small improvements in ability and strength encourages me. Measurable results are important to me, and when I can lift just a little heavier weight, do one more pushup or when my ave.resting blood pressure or pulse rate goes down a bit, I'm encouraged.

That asside, what motivates a person is very, uh, personal (?). Competition with others get's some folks going. Participating in sports or taking classes (martial arts, yoga, cross-fit, etc); community road races (running or biking races are pretty popular) and gets some folks turned on. Goal setting sometimes helps. Seeing improvements in your physique (take pic's of yourself - see before and after). Joining in a fitness community, on-line or in person...

I think the key is finding what works for you and building patterns which helps you stay focused.

I've always felt that it's important, both to me personally, and for the company and the clients, to provide a positive customer experience.
